hey guys, sorry for the noob AE question but I'm trying to setup a animated gradient to reveal a wire over the top of my rendered image but I'm not figuring out how to setup the transfer modes or layering properly in After Effects. Its bone easy in photoshop, so perhaps someone can tell me how to transfer this method to AE.

Basically, I have a render, a wire (cropped screencap), and a gradient mask image. In photoshop I just put the wire layer above the render layer and apply a mask to to it and past in my gradient. You can see the resulting effect in the image which basically shows what I'm after.

But how do I set this up in AE? I have my rendered frames and also my wire frames as two seperate layers, but how to set the mask up to get the same effect?

thanks for any help ;)

Make your comp so that render is the bottom layer, wire is above it and mask on top of that. Then set wire's TrackMatte -option to Luma.

Search help for Track Matte for more info.

To make your animated mask-layer, you can for instance use black solid layer with animated mask with feathered edges. Or animated gradient. Or scale it. Or animate levels... Well you get the idea...
