View Full Version : Is there a tutorial that shows how to model a complete character?
frontjibi 08-22-2005, 04:31 PM Some of the ones i've seen doesn't show you everything and doesn't really explaine properly. So what i am looking for is a good tutorial that shows how to model a human or human like character with every step. From head to toe.
So please if you know any, list them here.
Thank you.

max tutorial wouldn't help.
But hey, i need to ask you something.
Is there another way to add poloygons without damaging the shape of a head? I got the basics of the head down but i can't add more polys without damaging the shape. I know there is another way. I know you can use Isoparms but it will take too long to make me so many polys. So are these two the only way to do it or is there another one?
Oh and Isoparms only works with NURBS i see. But now that i've converted poloy shape to sub-d, i need to figure out a way to add poloygons in this mode.

I would also like to know, how you mirror an object. In poloygons mode, you select one side and then what you do?

Off the top of my head I think it goes like this....
You select one side of the object and delete. Then duplicate the remaining side as an instance via -1 on that axis. This way you can select an edge, face, and vertex and whatever transforms you do are translated to the other side automatically.
Forgive me if I am wrong, I don't have Maya in front of me right now. :D

select the faces that make up half of the object and delete them. then select the object and go to edit -> duplicate options. set the scale x to -1 and to instance. click apply.

Guess you're right.
I have another problem.
I converted polygon head shape to Sub-d mode. Now the problem it. I am unable to add poloygons. I am unable to extrude or bevel. By the looks of it these tools doesn't apply to Sub-D mode. Am i correct? But if there is anyway to fix this problem, please tell me?

Take a look at the organic modelling videos over at http://www.simplymaya.com/
They cost a bit, but they really are excellent.

one of the best character modeling tutorials was done for lightwave, they model a superhero character, body and face, its uber easy to follow specailly for an idiot like me, its on a training video tho, so not free, and I can't find who did, so this post isn't much help really is it?

Here are the pics.
It's been converted to sub-d mode from poloygon mode. Smooth level is on #3

Here's a little bigger pic. Smooth level on #1

So what i'm asking is a way to extrude, bevel, and add poloygons to it.

Doesn't the manual for Maya have a tutorial on sub-d modelling of a face?
