View Full Version : Chromatic Aberrations in AE
-=TiM=- 08-22-2005, 04:12 PM Hey guys,
I was just wondering, does anyone know how to create chromatic abberations in After Effects in areas such as the edges of compositions and/or displacement effects? (Ie when a displacement effect is added, any portion of the footage where distortion is noticeable, a chromatic aberration effect appears)
Thanks!

Don't know if this is exactly what you're looking for, but there is a freebie Photoshop action at Jeremy Birn's website (http://www.3drender.com/light/lens.htm) which does those very nice.
If you have an hour to invest in it, you can find out how to construct the same effect in AE by looking at the methods inside the Photoshop-action... It's not the quickest way, I know, but you'll learn quite a bit along the way... I know I did.
I bet there's a hit-a-button&drag-a-slider AE-plugin for it somewhere, but I just have't seen it yet.
HTH.

That Plugin would be flAir from frischluft.com. It contains a set of Blur and other plugins all of which support color shifting based on spectrum to some degree. If used subtly, it looks just about right. Also in the Sapphire plugins several tools offer this type of effect, though I generally advise against this suite - it's too expensive and many effects don't live up to that high price.

Ah yes, I've already had a look at that, thanks. :)
It's interesting, since from what I can see, it uses the spherize filter set on different intensities to distort the RGB channels separately...
I think that'd work, but it would be awfully 'fiddly' at the same time to get it to look right. :S
Thanks anyway!

Woah.... O_o That's awesome!
Wow, I think I've seen some of these FX used elsewhere before... very cool!
Thanks for that! I might consider buying those! :D
Thanks for the swift repsonses guys!

Two words. Channel Blur ! I did an add with a bunch of cg ide and found it worked brilliantly well with an edge matte of the elements. Also added a bit of a glow and blur
