View Full Version : computer speed & Max 5
wasted weasel 11-03-2002, 06:08 AM Pardon me if this question has already been brought up, or if you could direct me to any previous posts (i couldn't find any myself) i just got max 5 installed on my machine, and i've noticed it runs extremely slow compared to max 4.2.
i'm not sure if this is due to the fact that i recently had to reformat my computer and i'm now using windows 2000 again instead of windows XP.
my machine is a 1.2 AMD athlon, 512 RAM, actually pretty slow by todays standards, but it would deal with max 4 and 4.2 no probalem at all, no slow downs or anything.
the big problem i'm noticing is in the user veiwport (even in wire frame mode) when i rotate or zoom, there is some serious lag time. it's annoying as heck and wondered if Max 5 just needs a lot more power to operate smoothly compared to 4.2 or what??
maybe it has something to do with my graphics card perhaps?? 128 mb Nvidia G-Force 2
any help? thanks very much in advance

This doesn't help that much but I haven't noticed any slow down at all in 5. It might have something to do with your system.

What resolution are you running your monitor? I had some problems with Geforce 2 at 1600x1200.
I don't know what should be causing your slowdown. Have you tried turning dual planes off? Here's Greg's link to Geforce optimization guide.

That might help. I haven't noticed any slowdown in Max 5; but oddly I have noticed that upgrading to a Geforce 4 has not given me any different frame rates in the viewports. I haven't done thorough testing yet, but initially, I'm getting the same frame rates on a variety of scenes. :surprised

thanks for the link Mahlon,
I tried switching from 32 bit color back to 16 bit color and that made some difference, but not a lot.
looks like i just need to upgrade my computer.
how does your G force 4 perform in other areas?? what did you upgrade from?

Turn of Triangle Strips and the show triangles option in the Viewport->D3D options
the triangles that are on by default makes everything dead slow unless you use Editable poly wich doesn't have them :)

What dissplay mode do you run it with? Ogl d3d or heidi?

hawkamn:
90% of the time i work with edit poly over edit mesh (unless i'm working on a low poly game model) in which case the poly count is so low it doesn't really effect computer speed. i actually just read though that in edit poly mode you can speed up movement in the view port by adding an edit mesh modifier or a meshsmooth and turning off the visability in viewport option, then going back to sub-object level and turn 'on' view end result, i have noticed a slight increase in performance with this

when i installed Max 5 i chose the Open GL display mode, but I'm not relly educated enough to know what's better.....which leads to the question, "what is better....for speed?"
thanks for the help
