View Full Version : .3ds model import, scale factor?
raycerx 08-22-2005, 01:23 PM Perhaps someone knows the answer to this off the top of there head. When I merge a .3ds file into cinema it comes in seriously big and about 6 miles from the 0,0,0 point. Is there a consistant scale conversion that gets the imported model back into Cinema 4D unit size? I am currently working in 'ye olden feet'... Thanks for the help
Regards...

I'm a "feet" man too. Never wrapped my brain around metric.
As for 3ds, it depends on the settings used in Max. There is no hard and fast rule. I suggest you run a test import prior the merge. (open in new file) Then tweak the import setting in preferences.
I've had tiny imports and huge ones as well. It's different for each Max user, I guess.

What unit type are you using in Max? Whatever it is, it will import into C4D exactly the same scale IF you set the same units in C, AND have a 3ds import scale multiplier of 1.
However, if you are working in 'architectural' units in Max, then that will likely be inches. In C, preferences>Import/Export>3D Studio you set a scale factor. for inches > feet you would use 0.083 (which is 1/12) since one unit in the incoming file equals 1/12th of a foot.
Metric import files yeild different multipliers, but the relationship is not arbitrary. However, you must know the imported file's unit type, and the file must have been modeled to a proper scale--not all are.
Once imported, check an object of known size to be sure it came in the right scale.

EB_ That seems to make sense, I will work through the conversion as you said. Thank you. Sometimes the model I get is of unknown origin but for the most part it is a known quantity...
Thanks folks!
