View Full Version : Battle of Britain
chewaka 08-22-2005, 06:14 AM Hi everybody, this is the first time that I write post in the WIP section, I hope to be updating post often. :)
In my free time I dedicate something of time to this personal project, the idea is to make a sequence of BATTLE OF BRITAIN of 4 min duration, in which is to an interception of german bombers He_111 by spitfire fighters of the RAF, facing the escort of the bombers, the BF-109 figthers, trying show the sufficient realism like being able to feel what had to be an air battle of that magnitude.
The B.S.O of the video will be the Ave Maria of Schubert.
I hope that you like what I take so far, I will be upload tests, layouts, etc etc.
Thanks everybody, and excuse for me english...

This is a first version of the first sequence of the movie, surely will be changes of colors, contrasts, and some thing, but I believe that it is worth to begin the post.

Nice mate, very nice..
What program are you using mate?
And where did you get the stock footage / backdrop from?
chewaka

Hummm, thanks, but is full 3D
The background is make with photograph references with Photoshop, the rest made with 3DS MAX (clouds with Afterburn), and composite with Combustion.
Thanks for the comments.

Wow, you had me mate, really good..
The landscapes i've been done recently wouldn't fool a blind mole..
Though trying to do what i've done photorealistically would have taken me a damn sight longer..

The tracers look great, but I would work on the camera moves. The plane seems stationary. But a good job none the less.

it's really good but i would reduce the shaking of the camera

Hello.
If certain, you are right with the movement of camara, was single a test to see the sensation of the shoots, I did not put special attention to the rest, but thanks to comment it.
cheers.

That background plate is awesome. And the fighters are great too. . . only one comment so far: the camera seems a little too shaky. Are you going for the in-fighter camera look? If so, give us a cockpit frame or wing tip or something to show that. . . if not, just do smooth motions. I'm not positive on this (having never flown an airplane with guns), but wouldn't the Spitfire in the firing movie vibrate and shake more strongly when the guns are fired?

Yes Dbates, completely in agreement with the shake of camera, so single it were a test, now I am doing a taking battle better finished, I hope to upload soon.

The first one is pretty good, a bit too blurry for my taste, but it does go wll. The shaking i n the second clip doesn't fit. Faster and with less motion would be better imho.
But great stuff, awesome landscape and models.

Excellent, the first shot with the spitfires dropping off in formation is very, very impressive:)
This would not look out of place in a big budget movie.I mean it,i've watched Band of Brothers many times and your shot is easily as plausible as the 2nd episode airbourne
invasion(fully cg with live action backplates)I know B of B is a few years old now but they had a large team working on that shot. You have......YOU,so i have to take my hat off in respect, considering your shot isn't fully finished.Well done, look forward to more.

Thanks for all comments, now I am remaking the pilots in low poly (I have used an old model of a B-17 :)),as much of the RAF and Luftwaffe, and to finish BF-109e, soon upload updates.
Thanks again, musashidan, I also I am fan of band of brothers, is one best series. he is great honor which you have bought my work with the FX of this series, thanks.
I continue working...

Hello again.
Here I leave the pilots models, are modeled of very basic way, it is not going to see first planes of pilots in the movie, is so single so that something is seen inside the cabin, and seems that there is pilots or something, I hope you like.
to be continued...:)

ok first shot, the camera pan and camera shake looks great , up until the planes bank off,
even tho the timing of the planes bank is stepped, they still bank at the same speed, that is, over the same amount of frames, make one different than the other, also pull thier speed up as they bank which will increase the camera pan speed at this part and add more tension and dynamics to this scene. also a nice touch is to increase the camera shake as the camera pan speed increases and the planes bank past camera.
the shot with the tracers is nice, perhaps just alittle more camera shake.
that's it so far, looking forward to seeing more of this
keep up the good work.

Very nice work--I love the Spit's texturing; but there's one problem. In the 360° spin, the propeller seems to have no depth (it disappears when the plane is rotated perpendicular to the camera). I'm guessing you used a plane with a blurred-prop texture, then rotated the plane to give that lazy spin to the blur (neat trick). Just a small detail, and probably not important. . .
Nice work! I wish I was as good as that!

I just gave you five stars, :D... i think its brilliant work... I wish I had time to do somthing that detailed....The furthest I got was a kinda real looking corsair (Need Gas), but your animating these great looking planes with atmosphere, and the best bit about it is your making it look like footage of the time which when in color was very blurry.... beautiful....

Hi, I honestly haven't seen the Battle of Britain movie, even though I'm a huge fan of ww2 movies and games (Combat Mission, IL-2, not those arcadey shooter ones). Everything looks great, the planes and scenery all look very real.
One thign though, I am not sure if the White Cliffs go on continously like that, I have been to Dover and it seemed more inconsistent. But I suppose there might be other areas that are more consistent than this.

Hi, I honestly haven't seen the Battle of Britain movie, even though I'm a huge fan of ww2 movies and games
Yes,there is an old school Black and white film called "Battle of Britain"but i think this project is actually based on the real battle of Britain and not the movie.(even though the movie was also based on the real battle of Britain!!:))

Hi,thanks for your comments and contructive critics guys.
Single wanted to you to comment as it is the idea of this project.
The main idea is the one to show in 4 min several sequences showing different situations from that battle, it is not going to be a history of a combat, and not even it passes in the same day, if no, a mixture of images, trying to show lasts it of those days, something similar to images that they leave in Memphis Belle movie when the general one reads letters, something similar to a documentary one, that is the idea.
Of course I pay attention to movies as the Battle of Britain or a dark blue world, (that the best FX made in GC contain that I have seen in one aircraft movies), and to documentary real, to try to arrive at maxim level from possible credibility, considering my artististics and technics limitations.
Now to see as I have left everything in the end :)
Grettings.

Hehehe...if, it is a film to see in a good TV set, and indeed it has very good FX, here this web link of the creators www.upp.cz (http://www.upp.cz) , great studio.
Here new update of He-111, still it has left some details in the cabin etc, but I hope to have soon finished it and beginning to mount the planes to render, I hope that you like, and soon new updates.

My only comment is on the tracers video. You show one tracer round per spiraling trail. There were 4 or 5 (maybe up to 10 depending on era) rounds between each tracer so there should be a lot more smoke spirals than tracers.
also the spitfire has 8 machine guns @ 400-600 rounds per minute per gun, that is ALOT of lead flying out at once, just wanted to make sure you captured that "watering can" of bullets that German pilots described

11-21-2005, 03:40 PM
I like the general enviroment in the movies... the one I like more is the shoot animation the, shake of the camera and the colors of the background with the bullets trials, make it look so real ... I like it so much ...
Goo, exellent work ...images/icons/icon13.gif we are wainting to see the final composition

11-22-2005, 04:37 PM
You can only see the rounds glowing cos there tracer bullets, the actual bullets cannot be seen anyway, hence the need for the tracers..

Nice project!
To be perfectly honest, I'm not too impressed with the aircraft models. They aren't very accurate at all (shape, details, colours).
But the integration with the background is great! Really nicely done! I am very curious about how you did the environment. I assume it's basic 3D geometry with satelite images, but I am not sure. Could you show us how you made it, please?

Skyraider3D Could you show us how you made it, please?
Ok, because the truth is that I continue experimenting with the surroundings, depends on the shot I will use a thing or another one, I explain to you here of summarized form what I have used until now.
Basic Geometrie (plane) with photos: then that, a plane oriented to camera with a photograph (make for me or search in internet, google earth) mixed with other photos or hand painted (Spitfire formation and shoots test).
360º Environments: High Res Tile mounted in photoshop with photograph, turned a square image, Spherize with polar coordinates filter, and mapped a sphere with invert faces in 3D MAX with shrink map (360º aircraft test).
Geometrie of land and plane for the sky:Two geometries that is crossed (ground and sky) mixed by one mask of fog (texture or gradient map) with the same color that forward edge of pixels of the sky (White Cliffs of Dover Test).
This is what I have proven until now, all it posproduced with clouds, etc ,in combustion.
Thanks...I continued working...:arteest:
and sorry for my english.

Really nice stuff Chewaka, I'm enjoying watching your animation come together, its looking very realistic and top quality stuff.
Being a real aircraft buff though you haven't quite nailed the shapes of the 109 and He 111 and your spitfire looks closer to a Mk9 Spitfire than the Mk1 or 2 which was used in the Battle of Britain but these issues shouldn't detract to much from you animation. I really like the texturing and lighting job you've done on your aircraft and your pilots look good too.
