As you get better at Maya you will get better at mel. Knowing mel probably doesn't have much to do with being a great artist but it can help you to be a more productive artist.

ww

I guess it also depends on what your definition of being good at maya is.

obviously dude,

Maya's roots lie in its script editor - where your MEL commands appear. You can be a great CG artisteven if you don't master MEL, no doubt. But you will be the MASTER of MaYa if you know how MEL works.
MEL simplifies certain routines you might have to go over and over into just one command, so thereby saving you time. Also, MEL when correctly used, allows you to create certain effects not normally possible.
So my advice to you is not to roll your ideas when you hear about MEL. Make it your BEST BUDDY and you will be a MASTER of MaYa !!!!

Yes but regardless. Its NOT NECESSARY to know mel to be good with maya. There are lots of areas where regardless how good at mel you are it wont make the slightest difference.

Spend the proper time to learn the fundamentals first.

I also agree with Groove. Learn as much as you can in the fundamentals of Maya. There is usually 3-5 different ways to do most things in Maya. So that alone will make it a daunting task to say the least.

But learning programming languages, like PerlScript, C++ and Mel will make you take things to the upper plateau. This will make you ultimately more desirable as an employee as well.

dmc hit the nail on the head. MEL opens up new possibilities in your work. Knowing it can make you more productive, and enable you to do things that you couldn't with just the standard Maya toolset.

Get into the habit of keeping an eye on the script editor to see what the commands you use look like in MEL. If there's something you want to do but can't with the standard tools, think about how you might do it in MEL: that's the best way to learn, practice. Also take apart some of the scripts on highend to see how they do what they do. It's well worth the time spent.

imho it depends a very lot on what you plan to do with a software if you gonna need mel and/orprogramming capabilities.

e.g. i know lot modelers and texture artists, who are not able writing a single line of mel.. nevertheless they rock!

but if you intend to be more on the global 3d side, meaning you want to do all by yourself (which implies you are working in a smaller company) or you want to go for something like TD there will be no way around mel and more.

but in general i go conform with all the others: fundametals first and mel will come very soon by itself.. at least when you want to do something that you dont find a script for on highend :)

but the other way around is true as well i think.. as soon as you got compfortable with mel you start to think about tasks that you would never have come up with before, since you wouldnt even know that this can be done that way.

so good luck :)

i go confirm with alexx

if you`re modeller, why learn mel ??

but if you`re goin to be a freelancer or somekind of free artist and you wanna do jobs by your own, then mel gives you the real power of maya. i saw so many examples in productions where mel helped up speeding the pipeline or make things possible that were not possible.

so my suggestion is, learn it.

well i dont know anything about mel....theres only been a few times that iv wanted to do somthing that maya cannot do without the use of mel.....and each time iv found a mel script on highend that does exactly what i want..

i realy dont see much point in spending alot of time learning how to use it..9 times out of 10 theres a good chance somone (who has spent the time) has created the script you want
