View Full Version : Which is best for me? C++ or java

:banghead: Hi,
I have the opportunity of take a begginer lesons of C++ or Java; and I wondering which is better for programing in after effects or combustion. I have no idea what is the difference between java or c++, so help me to select which one is better for me. :banghead:

I had both programming languages for on term in my studies and have to say that Java was easier to understand. Portability is also a big plus on Java. It runs on nearly everything with only little changes in the source code.
But when it come to games, 3D and performance C++ must be your choice. I've never heard that a major game development studio uses Java for their games except they developing for mobile phones or PDAs.

So you see, it depends on what you will work on later. You need good knowledge of object oriented programming for both using the language in full extent. ;)

For graphics, use c++. Learn about directx or opengl api's after u've mastered the language.

I think the C++ learning curve is greater because of confusing syntax and memory management issues. I would recommed Java first, because the object oriented ideas transfer over to c++ nicely.

There are a number of OpenGL api's for Java as well, so programming for graphics isn't really an issue. I prefer JOGL (https://jogl.dev.java.net/), as syntax wise it's very close to the original C api, but there are also ones such as Java3d (https://java3d.dev.java.net/) and LWJGL (http://www.lwjgl.org/) which are more object oriented.
