Hello, I'm working on a lipsync exercise using the group project character and rig from the 10 second club. Its a short exerpt from "the tick" tv show. Anyone got any feedback or pointers before I move on to posing out the body. I'm trying a new workflow of doing the face first, just to see how it works out, and to test the capabilities of this particular facial rig. I havent done any movement on the eyes yet, because I dont know exactly what or whom he will be looking at. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. thanks guys!

Hey everyone, here's what i've got so far. I still have to do the fingers, the cape, and fix the lighting. I think i'm gonna do away with the last hand gesture on "evil" and just keep his arm bent there and make the facial animation the focus there. Also, I dont know if the build up/ anticipation before "knock off" is too big. I like the arms straight up stretching part, but I'm not sure about the litle move right before that. Anyone got any feedback or suggestions?

It looks a bit stiff.. I don't know how far along you are with it.. but just remember to keep it loose. And I didnt see much hip movement.. But this is a WIP forum, so keep up the good work.

Another thing I heard was it's good practice to nail your performance first and then animate the lip sync. It forces you to rely more on the body movement more to speak the words.

Maybe a more experienced animator can give you some more advice.:)

Yeah Studiomaxer, this actually rendered out with the wrong cropping, the part that isnt moving at all isnt supposed to be in shot. I did add some more movement to the hips though to loosen it up and changed some of the posing, and tweaked the cape a bit. this version also has motion blur. As far as doing the body posing first, thats how I've typically gone about lipsync exercises in the past, but I wanted to try something new, that Jason Osipa suggested in his Stop Staring facial animation book. often when you start blocking out poses to dialogue, you tend to overanimate to the beats and rythms, then once you add the facial animation, you end up having to back up and down play some of the poses and movements. You'll notice in the newest version that theres even less gesturing and such, as I really wanted the primary focus to be on the face for this particular exercise. thanks for the crits. You're the only one to offer any feedback so far. I'll keep you updated!

personally, i'd like to so more contrasting movement. mainly with his left arm when he clenches his fist, that pose isn't too great to me. since the sound bit is from an exaggerated super hero, i'd wanna see more bold poses. like after the first swoop of the two arms, take his left arm and swoop it across, in front of his body with a pointed finger in a super hero fashion. i.e. both arms come down @ "knock off" and then his left arm goes across in the opposite direction @ "all that evil!" i think it'd give good contrast. just my opinion though :P

Hyphen's right. Bolder poses. Not much to say about the lip sync. It looks pretty good.

Too much movement, like he's got parkinsons. Pick 4 or 5 strong poses to go with the dialogue beats, and use moving holds.
Im not feelin' his gestures. His "knock off" and "that evil" gestures feel unnatural. He's COMMANDING them to "knock off all that evil". How about just having him point, as you would when ordering someone to do something? Then go back to his "hero" pose but chest stuck out and towards the direction he pointed, as if defiant. IMO.
Lock his hands to his hips, its distracting that they are sliding all over the place like that.
Cape movement needs polish.
Nice work so far. Polish polish polish.

Good crits guys. I think I'm gonna go back to the drawing board on the poses and see what I come up with. I did want a dynamic mood shift, as thats how I interpreted the sound clip. i.e, he starts all smug and confident, and ends like a frustrated mother who's kids are running amuck! kep the feedback coming, and i'll try to post an update soon. Thanks again.

maybe try posting your thumbnails prior to animating. then the people can help you pick out which poses are strongest. also take into consideration that you wanna have poses with good sillhouette.
