I have been working on this short with some of my classmates at Full Sail. We wanted to do something different for our final project, so we all decided on recreating Sam Kieth's "The Maxx". It is basically about the Maxx trying to save the girl he cares about from his evil nemesis Mr. Gone.

It is very much a work in progress and only about halfway complete, but I wanted to share what we have with everyone for some constructive critisism.

Anyway, please have a look and let us know what you think about it so far......

Well first off I LOVE THE MAXX, I loved it ever since it was first put on M TV's Oddities. I also recently just watched the whole series start to finish! So enough about my love for it, about your animation....because this is a team effort I just might be harsh and picky about things....
The lighting is pretty good, but you should look into faking GI, its soo easy and it makes everything look soo good, and smoothed out.
The textures are good, they are basic and like the show:thumbsup:
The models are fine too, I was expecting the Maxx to be horrible....but whoever modeled it did a pretty good job. The only things I think should be fixed and I hope you dont think its to late since you have already animated it....is the muscles should be more sharp and defined...I couldnt see the head, but it looked good. The boots are way too plain, he didnt really even have boots, it was more like his foot was wrapped up. THE MAIN MAIN thing about the model, is an actual mess up:eek:! You have his middle finger as his large claw, when actually he had a full normal hand, the claw actually protrudes from his wrist and between his knuckles! It just looks silly As his middle finger.
The animating is pretty good, but also really really bad in some shots!
The characters walking around outside the ally look out of place, and have weird walk cycles....the maxx animations are good, but you should watch the show as a reference, the movents should be more floppy and have the traditional bounce and stretch to them.
The last thing I will mention is the camera angles and overall continuity....sorry to say that some of them are really bad in my mind....I know some are straight from the show...but those seem to be the only good ones....All I will say is that the very first shot should not zoom in from a high angle, it should be more ground level, and oh yah the lighting within the ally is off(THIS IS REALLY UP TO YOU GUYS) but the maxx should tottaly hidden in the dark inside the box...only his feet should show..whatever is sticking out.
Hahahahahahah I know that was alot of critiques, but I gotta tell yah yous have done a GREAT job soo far and I hope you guys will continue too keep up the good work, b/c I will be monitoring this closely b/c the maxx rocks and you guys have a good thing going!:applause:  :buttrock:

First i just want to say i loved the comic book, i have never seen the show.

I think you have made Maxx to small and he should be modelled a little diffrent if it was up to me.
The persons walking around on the streets have a very wierd walk cyclus, its not realistic enough. The claw thingy is all wrong on his wrists, not part of his fingers, it was nice seeing Mr.Gone, but where was Julie. Somehow the movie left me with a feeling, that this was not the ending.

the Maxx! cool
<-- my favorite comic

Nice start, my biggest gripe would be about his claws, they indeed come out from the top of his hand.

If you polish a bit the animation, it's a bit choppy sometimes, and adjust the lighting it's gonna be great... keep it up!

The Maxx is awesome, definately one of the best characters ever, I hope no one makes a lame comic book to film "blockbuster" out of him (Sin City being an exception in a sea of mediocre). I was looking at another WIP earlier and a guy had some little creature that looked like IS-es so it was a strange coincidence when i saw this post. ok
You should make the alley darker, and the cardboard box pitch black, maybe put a surface shader on his teeth and claws for that bit, so they stand out in the black (and you need to fix those hands up).And as AlphahKaneda said he should bound along insteadof the run/walk youve got. I like the silhouette of Mr Gone, can you give me a bit of a run down on how the cape was animated. and as a last comment maybe you should have a look at the angles used in the comic and base your editing style around this. Looking good, hope you nail it for Sam's sake :)

WOW!

First off thanks to everyone for taking the time to watch our project and for their comments. I am glad to see people are in to what we have done so far.

It seems like a lot of you did not like his hands/claw, and I will defiantly point that out to our modeler. The animations are going to be continuously tweaked and cleaned up, we were on a deadline for school so we had to turn in what we had then. As far as the lighting, when we made the alley as dark as it is in the comics, you could not see much of anything at all and we were afraid that people wouldn't know what was going on.

As far as bigdovii question about Mr. Gone's cape, that was a cloth sim one of our classmates worked on. However, we just brought on a super talented group of fx guys so that whole shot is going to be reworked.

kOmoo, your "feeling" was dead on....
We are going to have a second half which takes place in the outback.

I have an updated version right here. I hope you like some of the changes that we made, and please let us know what you think......

Hey guys. First of all, thanks for all the critiques. I am the modeler/ lighter/ render tech on this project and value everyone's input. If I am inturpreting this correctly, the maxx's claw is on his hand in place of his middle finger. The problem I have is that there are several shots throughout the series where it shows maxx with his claw slightly curled (the scene where he traps the iz in the dumpster) which led me to believe that it required a rig similar to a finger. Are you saying the claw should look more solid and loose the knuckle or what specifically do you find inconsistent about it? Again thanks alot guys and stay posted because the second half should be great.

Ahhh the ol deadline hahah, well its ok deadlines are the worst part of many projects hahha. I'm glad to know lots of tweaking will be done.....I can understand the lighting issue with it being too dark, but you should try it out again for us to see...if you want.
As for the update, I noticed the eyelid effect and it was awesome seeing Julie added. I still really like what you guys have done keep up the good work.

I know the confusion about the claw, some shots its straight and others its bent! I have disscussed this with many others and we found out that this is just the artists style, the claws are in fact solid. I could understand how you put the claws as a middle fingers, but it looks too much like long fingers. It is just a claw that starts inbetween the knuckels and ends on the top of his hand. Sorry if I cant be more clear.
(((((VERY VERY SMALL SPOILER ALERT))))))
(((((Some even argued it was garden tools he used under the purple costume, but that had to many conflicts within the story.....and it just sounds stupid)))))

I added some pics for you to see what I mean
KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK:thumbsup: :buttrock:
