Title: Jungle Fever Matte Painting, '05
Name: Edward F.l. Babb
Country: South Africa
Software: After Effects, Maya, Photoshop
A matte I did instead of an 'exploding head' compositing brief for college. I was sick of seeing people sneezing and their heads come off so i did this instead.
The original plan was to integrate a city (and a blimp) but despite the fact that they'd been constructed I felt they didn't fit the scene or mood I was trying to convey.
I used Photoshop for a majority of this, using maya only for paint effects and the occaisional bit of billowing smoke/mist.
All the moving elements were then comped in AFX 6.5

the original sketch - took about 20 mins. The devil's in the details dontcha know...
Originally wanted to put in acity (industrial and decrepit) which was why i constructed a blimp in maya. As soon as i got to a stage i was happy with, however, the blimp just didnt seem to fit. Also, i had a tight deadline, so i just dropped it.

here is a higher res version of the piece BEFORE it went into after effects. Its missing several details; the rain, the swaying grass, the birds and several colour and gradient adjustments.

Here is a picture illustrating what source i used and where. Keep in mind much of the original source was highly edited, painted over or of really bad quality (the best source images usually are, unfortunately). I wasnt working in a high resolution so its not too noticeable but still something to keep in mind.
If anyone would like to share stock with me (high res) i'd be very grateful. Youd get some too of course.
One or two of my source images i used cant be found, but theyre minor bits and pieces (the lake part is missing, the water texture i used and the two snowcapped mountains). The main ones are in the image:
