...two years ago exactly, on Nov/01/00, I finished my remake of the famous Dali's painting "Persistence of Memory". From then on, people has sent me every kind of critiques in several forums: from "wow! you're Dali!" "I thought that it was the original" "awesome" to "bastard" "heretic" "you deserve the lowest rating" "Dali was a banker"...

Now I'd like to know your own opinions. Thanks in advance

Great job! Dali would have done it this way if he had the means.

Keep it up!

to copy something it is easy, but it is more heavy, to have a vision and put it in picture or motion. People like Dali would be called ARTIST, because they have shown us their vision.

Peppo, fair point. But I don't think it's been done to show "vision". It's just showing ability to recreate in a different form. And a very good ability at that. ;)

Anyway, really nicely done palmix :buttrock:
The only thing is, did you make the sky texture from scratch? Because it looks a little odd compared to the original.

the sky was done with Terragen (rest in Max 3 without plugins). My goal wasn't to make an EXACT copy, but a RECREATION, or something like this...

Thanx 4 the comments

it looks fantastic, though in my personal opinion the mountain in the back ruins it somewhat, the texture mapping is awful and it looks just too 3d

I think you have really done a great job of copying the original but I do agree with others that it is just that.. a copy. I have to wonder what you could do if you added your own creativity to it. Could you recreate a look such as Dali's without recreating an exisiting work of his? What would this world look like if you were in it and could move around? Things like that would take this to the next step which Dali was not able to. What would Dali have done if he were a 3d animator?

I'm a Dali fan, so as expected, I'll have to say that sorry man, a copy is a copy. If you say that it was meant to be a recreation, why did you choose to convey the concept of "persistence of memory" with the same colours, same shapes, same layout... you know what, come to think of it, that looks awefully familiar dude... hey, isn't that someone else's painting?

If you conveyed the same emotion, it's because you were very skilled at tracing someone else's vision of "persistence of memory"

I don't think Dali would have done it that way if he had the means. I really don't think so.

I like gmask's suggestion.
I think it'd be totally awesome if you could find a way to convey that same emotion, or concept, by using another angle, another lighting setup, another something, and making it look "Dali". Since you've tried to "recreate" his work, then you must be very familar with Dali's style, it's very distinct.

I checked out your site, and personally I liked this image much more, you should show us more of your own creations.
Although, well, I guess it's interesting to see remakes of famous artpieces, but it takes away the creative value of the artist, and leaves the technical know-how, and observation skills to be appreciated. But I think that if you wanted to pay a tribute to Dali, he would feel more honoured to see an original creation inspired by his own work.

well.. I too think, that instead of just copying the original as it is, you should add it something of your own to the picture. now, there is just no point..

also, your picture looks a bit too soft, and clean..

You know i've got to say i really do like it but the one thing that bothers me is the lighting around the tree trunk base on the left side of the image, it just dosn't apear to be resting on that flat surface.
Anyway i like it, however, i also appreciate your other work more:beer:

It looks really good. Very close to the original. There is nothing wrong with copying others work at all (as long as you are not trying to pass it off as your own work or idea). It is a great way to learn.

One thing I think would be fun would be to render it in stereo 3D. A good old red/blue image. Then you could also play with things like putting things at strange depths and things like that. Or how about finishing the rest of the world and making a QT VR panoramic or better yet a real time 3d environment so we could travel to the shoreline and look back. These are some of the possibilities that recreating an existing 2d image in 3d open up.

That’s my 2¢
