View Full Version : Anyone Use Real Flow 3 as well as Unlimited

The reason I'm asking is that my school only had Complete and an instructor had said that Real Flow was quite good and that I should take a look at it, but now my school is upgrading to Unlimited. So I'm a bit unsure as to if it would still be beneficial to get the Edu version of Real Flow. Is Real Flow better than Unlimited at doing fluids I'm mainly looking at doing surf waves and liquids pouring from glasses. The instructor who recommended Real Flow in the first place is no longer there so I can't ask him.

Also has anyone ordered the EDU version from Next Limit I emailed them and you have to order it through email and provide your CC details either by email or fax and I'm a little unsure of providing details this way. As I've always ordered things through secure websites in the past and it just seems a little strange when you can order everything else through their website.

Thankyou for any help

Cheers,

Realflow is a bitch to learn, but very powerful. You can do dual-fluid interactions (water in glasses, water colliding with water), which Maya can't.

I'd really like to see more fluid effects like realflow added to Maya. Not that I enjoy over bloated software but it'd be a nice addition in my opinion.

realflow is pretty cool. i downoladed the evaluation version and i am trying it out now. for what you want to do it should work like a charm. like every other piece of software out there it will take time to learn. i am thinking of purchasing it myself. i sent nexlimit an email aobut the student version too.

Alias should buy realflow and incorp it into Maya Unlimited imho.

realflow is SLOW and if the sim doesnt work out you type in some more arbitrary values and hope for the best. You really have very little control. Now if maya could incorperate their mesh system. THAT would rock. Blobbys.... not so great

I really didn't find Real Flow that difficult to pick up, it was quite intuitive for me actually. And I'm not really sure what you mean by it being slow, it's simming out millions of particles, it's not going to be insanely fast, 3.0 had some optmizations to that area however. If you are doing realistic water simulation then Real Flow hands down over Maya Unlimited. I haven't had a chance to test out some of the new particle stuff in Maya 7.0 yet.

your right BillSpradlin its not that hard at all. right now i am trying to create waves and its so cool. i think once you have used many software programs it only takes a matter of time before you get a hang of something new. right now i am trying to figuer out how to export the wave out and import it into maya. i wonder how maya 7s particle system would compare. last night that came to mind. realflow is based on particles and maya has particles, so wouldn't it be possible to do the same thing. i ask that question because i was trying the realflow tut of a geyser and i realized that in the maya 5 book there was a tut on something similar.

If you really want realflow, nextlimit are giving away pro licenses to anyone that makes a tutorial of an acceptable standard (either with the demo or a pro/studnt license) so if you've got the time what have you got to lose.Great idea because the docs arent really that comprehensive, checkout the realflow tutorials forum for more info.

Thanks for getting back to me guys, I just watched my Digital Tutors DVD, I'd actually forgotten that I had bought it as I bought a big pack of training DVD's at the same time and hadn't got through them all yet. Well the program definately looks interesting from what you guys have said and after watching the DVD so I'm probably going to get it. I'm now just waiting on Next Limit to get back to me about some different payment options.

Thanks again,

RealFlow is AWOSOME! I am a Maya user and theres no way Id try in Maya what I've done in real flow in at least 1/4 the time The best thing is that you can bring in realflow scenes as particles for Maya also not sust progressive meshes. It does get slow but its purely dynamic and well as far as control goes you are controlling pure dynamics so you can't just mess around to get it to look right but rather think logically and a bit of luck:D. As a TD I love it because its challenging and Maya just cant easily do a lot of the stuff it can. It gets frusterating but the payoff is intense. You will need as fast of a computer as possible though. I built a dual 3.6 Xeon 50% for freelancing and %50 for Realflow:eek:.

I like it but then I'm mostly a beginner in that sort of stuff so if your a bit more advanced and have already worked in Real Flow a bit it may be a bit too basic for you.

actually i am a beginner at realflow like you. i downloaded the evaluation version and i really enjoy using and figuring out how it works. my main problem is importing the particles and mesh into maya. i'm not sure if i am not doing it correctly from the realflow end or maya end. when i import everything shows up in the outliner but not in the scene. since you say the dvd is pretty good for a beginner i am going to check it out. i was thinking of getting maya unlimited 7 but i think i will just stick to complete and get real flow. right now i have the student version of 6. this is my last year of school so at least i will be able to upgrade to commercial for smaller price than unlimited. i have a question thats off topic, all the stuff that maya fluids can do, other than the ocean type stuff, like, clouds, billowing smoke for explosions, and so forth. how would you go about doing that other wise. would you just use the maya dynamics to get those effects. anyone know if you upgrade the student version of 6 to commercial if its possible to get 7 for that 899 upgrade price.
thanks for that bit of info Andrei2k, cause i am in the process of upgrading my pc.
