View Full Version : converting demoreel from NTSC to PAL

I guess this post actually has three questions in it :)

I need to send a copy of my demoreel overseas, and I just realized that it probably won't be appropriate being NTSC, so I need to create a PAL version. How can I go about this? I was thinking I could just re-render out me reel from After Effects upsizing from 720x540 to 720x576 and adjust the framerate output from 3o fps to 25 fps. Is it that simple, or am I missing something?

Also, I'm intending to burn this to dvd. I use TMPGenc to make my mpeg2 file, and I noticed they have a PAL preset. So it looks like I can make the PAL mpeg2 ok. But do I need to have special dvd burning software to make a PAL dvd, or is there no difference? All I have (and can afford) is the crappy HP DVD burning software that came with my burner. I guess what my question here boils down to is is there anything special that I need to be aware of when burning a DVD intended for Europe?

And finally, is there any way I can test my PAL reel to make sure it actually works before mailing it out?

Thanks for any help!

to save yourself a lot of trouble and frustration. take your reall to a duplication service that can do the cross-format for you. atleast you know it will work.

If your stuff does not contain any external footage, that would work. However, if you use video or image sequences specifically recorded or created with NTSC framerates and field settings, you need to convert them and that is an art in itself and AE by no means ideal for this.

No, no special tools required. Basically even a DVD video is just a data disc with a pre-defined directory structure. All the DVD player will do is look into the two directories AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS and play the files it finds there.

Unless you happen to have a native PAL equipment, that is not really possible. All your stuff will always look ok on the computer, so there is little point in testing it this way. But do not feel bad about it, we PAL people have the same problems the other way around. As a safety measure you should include a data CD with some quicktimes for computer playback or even pack those files onto the DVD in a separate directory.

;)I looked into this already ( a little) and I've found that the 5 places I contacted so far refused to convert my demo reel because I have copyrighted music and intellectual content on it and I don't have 'permission'. It really sucks how anal I've found these people, but I suppose their just covering their butts so... I'll keep phoning around though, maybe I'll get lucky

Mylenium, I rendered out all the frames on my demo reel from Maya at 720x540@30fps. So will this not work if I just try to do the conversion in AE?

Ahem, most likely not. Nobody will support you in commiting a criminal act and if I were you, I'd be rather quiet about it and give up right away. While it might be okay to use your favorite song to accompany your stuff and play it in front of the few select people that see your reel, it surely is immodest and highly disrespectful to use other people's imagery in your reel. Sorry to burst your bubble, but any potential employer will turn you down just for that. So start over new and make sure you get proper permission from everyone first and mention them in the credits.

Well, no point in discussing this now, isn't it?

Myleniumwow, thats kinda harsh. I guess I was not very clear, let me clarify..

My demo reel is for modeling. I have on it a model of a car, a fighter plane, and a local cathedral. the music is an instrumental jaz number that came out about 10 years ago. No its not 'original' material, but last time I checked, people put these sorts of things on demo reels all the time... Obviously I'm not claiming to be the designer of these things, thats commonly obvious. This reel is not for sale, its just a demo of my modeling skills. I'm not using anyone's imagery in my reel, everything in it I created myself based on reference.

The intellectual concepts are obviously not mine.

Please... I'm not a thief, or an imposter.
