View Full Version : Maya focal length to real world units?
DJSmackMackey 08-19-2005, 03:15 PM Does anyone know how maya's camera focal length matches to a real world camera? My problem is that I have a photograph that I have to match the focal length to, and the EXIF info says it was shot with an 8mm focal length. How do I set up Maya's camera to match that, since obviously setting it to 8 would give me a fisheye type of effect. Is there a calculator program out there for this maybe?

Maya operates like a pinhole rectilinear lens. It can't simulate a fish eye lens without a plug-in or MR Lens Shader.
Try the Aperature Shader for Mental Ray:

no, I didn't mean I wanted a fisheye lens. But I figured out how to get it to work. I just had to look up the camera online and find it's focal length min and max and corresponding 35 mm equivalent. but does anyone know which setting in maya is standard 35mm? is it 35mm academy?

Look in the render globals. It is academy (1.333) at 320x240 (or 640x480 is my default).
