View Full Version : My laptop just can't handle XSI...

Man, what a bummer! I just ordered 2 gigs of RAM for my HP Pavilion ZT3280us and popped them in this afternoon. I fired up XSI with a huge grin on my face and as soon as I re-opened my rig tutorial file (I was following Softimage's rig tutorial) and began to work, it froze my PC and I had to cold boot it.

Until I can afford a new PC (with a good video card)... unfortunately XSI is out of my league...

My PC specs:
--------------
1.6 Centrino
2 gigs RAM
80 gig HD
ATI Radeon Mobility 9200
WinXP Home

[EDIT: Does anyone think maybe it's my Windows XP *Home Edition*? I noticed the requirements ask for *Pro*]

It's like a stab in the back, I was getting so into this program too. Just wanted to share that lol... I know it's highly impossible to do anything else.

Btw, I followed all the "optimization" tips, thanks to all who contributed :) PC is faster, just not more powerful I guess. My videocard doesn't perform OpenGL so well I hear.

its the video card , otherwise your specs are just fine. I ran xsi on a dell inspiron 8600 with 1.6pm , 1 gig ram , and a gforce fx with 64mb of ram and it ran just as smooth as on my boxx workstation.

I wish I could replace my card, but it's builtin :\

Oh well... seems like my path to XSI Land has been a troubled one lol...

1 - I made an idiot of myself in the begining on this forum
2 - Couldn't get foundation to run (env setting error)
3 - Now my video card is too whimpy

Man, oh man... well now I have an excuse to buy a new PC lol.

Have you tried to play around with a different version of the video drivers?

quite a few people, some of them working for Soft, have a laptop with an ATI mobility and have XSI running on it.
it's not incapable of running XSI, it's just a major bitch to find the right combination of drivers and settings.

if you spend a couple of days looking for info in here and on xsibase (search button is your friend ;) ) you will be able, with some work, to get it running smoothly.

if the sysetm is 1/2 decent it should have at least an agp slot that you can put a better card in. if it's only 1/4 decent it probably won't. whatever the case, any reason to get a new system is a good one!

AmbiDextrose: I'll keep searching, but I've tried everything so far. I went to Omegadrivers.net and tried theirs but it didn't work. Then I went to an ATI forum and tried their suggestions and so far none have worked. I won't give up though.

ThE_JacO: I hope I find this special combination :)

joshone: It's a laptop though, I doubt it will have a slot for a videocard inside, but I will double check just in case...

Leo,

I haven't used XP Home but have you applied the latest patches to your OS? I had a similar problem with Rhino3D a few years back. Applying the latest patches and video drivers solved my problem.

Your laptop has better specs than my wife's laptop but I've had no issues running XSI FND over there (and her machine has one of those integrated/shared video cards).

I have a ati 9200 based system (actually igp 9100 - its the same). XSI runs quite ok on it. Just keep checking the drivers, I'm sure you'll find a working combination.

Hey I also have a laptop with an ati mobility card, 9700 (mobility) I run Omega drivers though, not the ati catalysts.

Na, Home edition runs XSI fine.

Well I got an older Omega set to work on my Laptop. It's the one based on Catalyst 5.6 and not the newer 5.7 or 5.8 (those didn't work).

So let's see what happens lol...

I'm running FND on an IBM Thinkpad T40

My specs:
--------------
1.5 Pentium M
1 gig RAM
ATI Radeon Mobility 7500
WinXP Pro

For modelling, it runs just fine. I find that when using the texture editor, it can become fairly sluggish (this oddly does not seem connected to my texture size or my scene size) but overall XSI is completely usable.

Most ati mobility cards state that you should go to the laptop manufacturer for your video drivers. Don;t use the ones direct from ATI. I use the drivers directly from IBM and it works great. I never had to experiment with drivers.

The only caveat is occassionally polygon raycast does not select what I click on. But I've heard this is a common issue with ati radeon cards in general.

Hello, how about the newer ATI Mobility Radeons? Does XSI run ok on them? I am considering to purchase an Acer Ferrari 4000 that comes with ATI Mobility Radeon X700 for mostly XSI and Maya. I personally prefer Acer products and the Ferrari is amazing, but Acer laptops only come with ATIs...... or I have to get a Dell Latitude?

I was using the default drivers and while XSI would load, it would go all weird when I hit T in a shaded viewport, the whole model would become like a big spiky star and XSI would crash if I tried anything. Once I updated to the Omega Drivers, version 2.6.42, it fixed the problem. Now XSI runs great on my T40.

This doesn't help anyone CURRENTLY having problems, but for anyone considering a NEW laptop to run XSI, do what I did:

I got my laptop from a dealer that had a good return policy with no restocking fee BS. Then, I put XSI through a week of pretty rigorous testing to try and "break" it.

Since things seemed pretty stable, I kept the laptop. If it HADN'T run XSI very well, I would have returned it and picked up something different.
