yeah you can use HDR, but you need to convert it to Floating point TIFF, and you need to render with Mental Ray.

head over to this (http://pub86.ezboard.com/fhdrshopfrm1) site and locate the thread where you can download HDR-shop,
then you need to go to this (http://www.debevec.org/) site to d-load some probes,,
convert the probe to a flotingPoint tiff in HDR-shop
then load the new probe that you convert to a floatingPoint tiff on the incandescence channel of a material, then put that to a huge sphere that covers the whole scene..
zero out all lights,,, hit render
