blankslatejoe 11-02-2002, 06:16 AM Hey everyone, I've been inspired by Andrew Jones over in conceptart.org to do self portraits more regularly, this was done in photoshop in about 6-7 hours of work. Whatdya guys think?

thanks! the red bar is there because, when I put it in at first accidently, a classmate turned around and said "holy &*%$#$ , what did you just do to it!???!"
I figured that was a good hint to keep it, I also feel it offers a good contrasting element to the painterly approach, since it's an obviously very "precise" and computer generated, so yeah, that's my reasoning anyway. You guys think i should drop it?
whose barnett newman? I'd like to see what he does/did.
:):) thanks again!
Very cool, but loose the bar, totaly. The image is sweet as is, you dont need anything else.

Hey, I like, I like!
The bar changes the style of the image very much. Without it, I see a well done self portrait - with it, I see a more intriguing and balanced composition.
Try keeping the bar there but pinting it with the same stroke style your portrait was painted in.. and perhaps darken it (the bar) just a little.
Nice! :)

thanks, I printed the bar darker with a darken blending mode apllied, so the brush strokes from the background showed through, it came out decently, but not as good as I would have hoped. Thanks for the comments, I think I'm gonna try and move on to more of these self portraits now.
thanks!

I say keep it but with what MystricDread said about changing it... It is a drastic change in style which is pretty aesthetically pleasing to the eye though I think it would be a bit more effective if done with the same style as your noggin on the right. Try them both and see what you think.

thanks guys, I took your advices and tried out some versions and i feel the best one was the red stripe that had an inside that was "painterly" but still had a graphically crisp edge. that way the contrast was definitely there but it also fit a little better.
