View Full Version : Why is nearly all teaching material on rigging done on maya?
Hexodam 08-18-2005, 12:58 AM I'm a 3dsmax user and for about forever I have been searching for propper rigging teaching material which i can use 100%. I know that there are lots and lots of awsome maya rigging books and tutorials and ofcorse the general princible of rigging can be applied across different programs but for me with very limited skills in that area in 3dsmax its just too hard.
Why do they all use maya?
Why hardly ever any of the other big programs? 3dsmax, xsi, lightwave and so on

Maya biggest strength is from a TD's point of view. So stuff like rigging, character setup and any other kinds of customizing has been more popular from Maya. 3dsmax is a little more archaic for those kinds of things. Max script was more of an after thought an is sorta bolted on where mel and other things are the entire foundation that Maya was built on. The interface is one big mel interpretor.

One site I ran across

Most people who use Max use Charactor Studio

thanks, this is sortof what I know already
but for example when it comes to facial rigs, and programing a on of switch for the ik (or better yet a relative bar which allows you to control the strength the IK has on the bones), for arms for example
but most importantly facial rigs
Also I frankly think that character studio sucks, if i had my way i would want discreet to throw away character studio and replace it with character animation toolkit, thats one awsome rigging apparatus.
beaker,
Thats very true, that is the power maya has so its very understandably that riggers prefer maya.

Maya is easy to learn and master. Kinda like Poser.

Welll, I don't use charactor studio either. I think that there is no way to do an IK/FK setup in max (without programming something)

Maybe this helps? http://paulneale.com/ I dont rig much but by the looks of his work he does some kick ass stuff with the Max bones.
He also published dvd's http://www.cg-academy.net/dvds_menu_3dsmax.htm (scroll down a bit)
I think when you ask around a bit in the Character Rigging thread here on cgtalk you will get some satisfying answers.

Reinier,
thanks, think that is just about what I have been looking for, though rather expensive :P $126 for both hands and feet and an extra $63 for skining
and dvd4 is in the pipes about facial rigging, sounds very good :D

Its a purely commercial thing. Ever since the great Maya boom where it started to pop up in ever big VFX movie, a lot of people flock to Maya by kneejerk reflex, thinking that they'll be able to do the same stuff if they just master it. Obviously that crowd is a big cash cow for the myriad training DVDs and books that have been produced for Maya rigging, dynamics, rendering and so forth.
The reason other CG apps don't get nearly as much training material is that they are much easier to master. Maya has a lot of strengths. User-friendly design isn't one of them unfortunately.

Maya is seriously a geek heaven... Rigging is kinda geeky... Do the math...
I rig and animate everything in Maya but use usually other apps for modelling and texturing

what app do you use for texturing? the only other app I use, or have used is max and I found thier texturing tools to be laughably bad..at least for me. I haven't really tried much else because I really like maya's tools, but I might check out another package if they have better texture/uv tools.

Anyway... I know I haven't updated my site in a looong time (maxTD), situation I intend to correct shortly. If you want to look at a rigging tutorial that's more recent, I wrote the rigging chapter in Inside 3ds max 7, which is included in the accompaining DVD (it wasn't printed for space reasons). Maybe that's a little more affordable. However, please seriously consider Paul's DVD's. There is a LOT there. Hope this helps. Cheers!

try being a Houdini rigger....
it really is all down to what the market wants...and right now it's Maya training...
there is far more character animation in film etc being done in Maya and XSI than in max (not sure how much char animation for games is done in max..) and so there are more jobs for maya riggers = more demand for training material

Howdy Mr Goode, I use deep paint, deep uv and hopefully soon, the almighty Z-brush
