How do I render out files from Maya in-order that I can apply 3d-channel effects in AE (specifically depth of field)?

I tried rendering as .iff with z-channel checked and that did not work at all, I then tried rendering as .rla which allowed me to apply the effect but it does not work properly it just applies the blur uniformly across the board - it is not reading the z-channel. Any suggestions? thanks

in max we render out as .rpf or .rla

i have the same problem, tryed everything and blur is applyed to the whole image...

I tryed the 3d channel extract to get the Z-channel of the image and it didnt work, the problem is that the whole image was gray, i think thats why the DOF wont work properly. Then i adjusted the B&W scale in the 3d chanel extract propertyes and i got the Z-channel visible in the AE, but dont know how to save that z-channel and use that new B&W scale in AE DOF.

P.S. To correctly adjust the B&W scale and get Z depth in AE you have to open the image in Fcheck and read the numbers that are shown in CMD in background and apply the same numbers to the black and white scale in AE. Then play with the scale to get the same z channel as in Fcheck. Also .iff files with Z channel are not supported in AE, use some other format...RLA or something.

thats all i know for now. Bye.

The AE supports perfectly only .RLA not .RPF.
Try use the compound blur, using Z-depth with mask.
Look at the Help of Maya about render passes.
