This is probably a very dumb question... but what is HDRI and how do we use it on max?

You'll find tons of resources on it. And yes HDRI is supported with 3dsmax.

It's an image where you can contol the values of the light in the image and have those values affect your scene lighting and textures.

It's an image format that lets you have brightnesses way over white (255,255,255). It's generally used as a way to light a scene as part of a skylight or in reflections.
