Hi
This is a new little character of mine (one that i'll post WIPs of for a change... :D). He's based on a concept by a friend of mine (Tuchten).

Well.. C&C until you're blue!

nice concept, his arms just seem way to long though

He's got weird proportions because it is a mechaniszed suit (like Appleseed but smaller..) or an exo-skeleton. Long arms should mean more power or agility, but you're right about the legs. It should perhaps be more logical to make them longer in order to run faster. Perhaps it's because of the balance. I'll just ask the concept artist :)

Lazy working... Do you like the face better this way? It should look a bit androgyn.

Wow, that's a great concept to work from!

I rather like the proportions as they are, with the thick legs and long feet.

I think what makes the concept androgynous is the shallow nose and simple eyes, and also the heavy shadow under the lips with the sharp cheeks. It would be a lot easier to tell how your sculpt translates this with a smooth shaded pic.

Keep updating, it's looking good!

Kepp going it looks great! I like the proportions. Maybe I'd move the hip up just a tiny bit :)
And as Lachrymolonaut said, post a smoothshaded pic, it's easier to crit. (but black wireframe on shaded is so sexy :D )

i raised the hip a bit, cursed a bit over the hands and drank a cup of coffie.
smoothshade... hrmm... but i like the black wire.. okay. :p

Good set-up so far. The hands are looking good, nice heavy thumb. You were having trouble with them? To me the wrist, thumb and the arch of the hand including the knuckles are the important elements that need to fit together just right. After that the fingers are easy.

Odd shading on the face, is the gray in the jaw area intentional? I usually model with all the normals hardened. I use Maya, so when I want to have a better look at the form I select the object, hit a shelf button for selection>convert to verts, and hit another for soft normals.

Are you planning on rigging this character, and if so, are you going to manage a lot of separate objects or are you going to connect a lot of these together?

Keep updating!

the grey area is just two combined objects with different materials (i modelled the cheek and eyes separate and it was easier to part them if they had different colours). Now i've grown to like it somehow.. :)

I always work with wireframe on shaded, but i like to play around with hard/soft edges.

Yes i'm planning on rigging him but have'nt really decided if i'm going to make separate objects or use a smooth bind. Any ideas?

I'm also planning a highpoly proxy (which i'll probably do before the lowpoly) for normalmaps.

By soft skin, do you mean smooth bind? If so you can combine objects and/or select multiple objects when you bind to your skeleton. I'm sure a smooth bind with influence objects would be just dandy for this guy, but speaking of which, I haven't a clue what limitations most game engines have when it comes to rigging.

hrmm.. yes i meant smooth bind :)

with influense objects do you mean parenting separate objects to the skeleton?

Havn't done anything this weekend, but the important parts of the hand is finished though. I'm currently working on a test rig for the hands. This is the first time i'm building a partly mechanical character and i want it to look good animated as well..

If you got any tips and trix just let me know!

i believe the design and concept is great, and the final product could be really sweet.

one thing though. since the 2d concept artwork lacks in detail in some of the more technical areas (like his communications-helmet-thingie), maybe you could find inspiration for that somewhere else. the war technology of today is great if you just want random techy-stuff, that still looks logical and usable. you get me?

love his short legs :)

yeah todays war technology suites this guy perfectly. I'll work more on detailing later on as i get the overall shape and feel of the character.

thx

Okay guys, the latest vertexpulling resulted in a better face and a couple of addons. I've made a hand rig to test the jointing and if you want i'll upload a playblast.

i think iīd like to see his fingers a bit techier / longer / meaner. i dunno but i just come to think about edward scissorhands when i see this dude.

umm right, isnt his eyebrows a bit big? maybe tone that down just a little.

but your capturing the androgyn looks of the concept pretty well.

I like the headgear anyway, thou i cant see much difference in the face, small pic vs big pic etc

i think HSI is trying to add some extra posts to his count :p

I have to disappoint my subscribers and say that I won't be able to work on my model until monday. I have to complete my application for practical training.

If you have any tips on which companies that currently look for people just drop me a PM or post in this thread.
