You plug it the same way as any other MR shader into your MR MAterial Shader slot of SG....
n.layeres - control how many layers will be used besides default base.color
color.* -this is where you plug your channels
factor - like transparency in PS....impact of current layer
Thats it
Everything is pretty self explanatory....Cant give you advices on using SSS cause i m personally not SSS user at all :D

I think people use mix8 with SSS just for separating the outputs of SSS shader for better control...the same way i m using ctrl_shading btw.....just learn how to use SSS...and break it into separate layers via mix8layer....

Don't forget to plug the lightmapshader in the mix8Layer SG as well.

using mix8layer for OSX
it is installed propperly, appears in the mr-material list and renders without error message, but it produces black objects that behave like an alpha channel
any hints?
thnx

Are you meaning you are getting a black alpha channel for your objects?
If so, enable "pass custom alpha channel" in your MentalRay Render Globals/Settings.
Or use a maya surface shader to pipe your mental ray shader through via the out color.
