View Full Version : Very specific question about fonts and psd files
gigatron 08-16-2005, 06:15 PM hey,
i was wondering... here is an issue im having...
When I go to print my flyers at a print shop... sometimes the fonts I use are OBVIOUSLY unavailable at the print shop... so if I have a last minute change to do... I end up not being able to change the text... because I lack the font... the text remains because photoshop saves a vector, but once you go in to edit, it sets it to some default font...
This makes me cry... so obviously I could save the fonts on a cd (those that I use I mean) however, is there a way for photoshop to embede the font files? Or is there a tool which can analyze a photoshop file and prepare the fonts for me so i can transfer the ones i need exactly? I dont know if im making sense.
Anyone got some ideas?
This would be a great help! THANKS ALOT EVERYONE!

no, there isnt a way for PS to embed fonts.
there may be some pre-flight font software or plugin for PS but just try and take note of what ones you use until you find something and take the fonts with you.

Unfortunately photoshop cannot save the way illustrator (or even flash) does (embedding vector information/fonts), so I'm afraid you'll have to turn your fonts in.

hmm damn... adobe... for CS3... if there ever will be a CS3... you know my name... I know where you live Adobe I know where you live!
Argh that sucks... is there a plugin or something that can 'ready' the fonts... because it's too much a hassle if I have all kinds of fonts used...
So Illustrator does this huh? It embedes the fonts? Because photoshop saves the vector info, it saves the state the fonts are made in, however, if you try to edit the fonts, it can not, because it automatically loads up a default font, other than that, what you typed earlier and saved, it saves the vector of that... which is okay, because then I can still print it without the fonts on the system, just not change it...

If you want to allow for last minute changes, there are no workarounds for this in any application. Ask any printer what is the number one cause of delays on jobs and 9 out of 10 will probably say font files not included with the job. Programs like Acrobat, which embeds fonts, are fine if that is your final file but if you require last minute edits on a regular basis,
then you must have the fonts to load on the computer that is actually outputting your file.

I believe (not 100% certain) that mlkdesign was mistaken. AFAIK, Illustrator does just like photoshop does and converts the text you've added into a vector object. It doesn't save the font so you can later edit it.

Maybe if Adobe was listening they should include something like this in future releases :) Anyone got Adobe's contact? haha...

Don't the PDF save options include 'embed all fonts' or something in illustrator ? I might be completely wrong as I have not touched illustrator in several months.

Not sure which version you're using, but in CS2 I don't see that option anywhere in illustrator (doesn't necessarily mean it's not there, just that I've looked in the pdf save options and under the help). Under the help section for the product, it basically says if you're missing a font, you have to install/activate those fonts before you can use them, or else substitute another font for it.
i had a look at PDF as well, but also couldnt see an embed fonts option. I think this is logical because when saving a PDF the PDF will try and retain as much data structure of the orginating program as possible...as fonts aren't part of PS's native file structure, it makes sense.
