The best way is following a video tutorial  Lightwave's site has a very cool video, check it! I always start from a cube anyway

well, i started off by just looking through all the forum images and at what people were saying... i actually find the lightwave thread (and the one on their website www.lightwave3d.com ) to be great sources of info on these kinds of things, as they talk about getting flow right, and where all teh good tutes are, they can easily be translated for use in C4D. in fact check out the lightwave site. there's also a c4d specific one in the links/support section on maxons website www.maxon.de

good luck! :)

I don't think starting with a cube is good but that's just my style, I would try diffrent things, here's the single tutorial I've learnt most in head modeling, works quite with c4d, just get a edgeextude or r8 and you'll be fine:

For a first try, I'd like to recommend method of making polygons step by step with guide images, rather than box modeling, if you wish really realistic one. There is an excellent book by arndt "Maxon Cinema 4d 7" Chap.4 is devoted to it. Sure, using edge tools!
