I'm currently learning 3D animation in Maya (transisting from 2D to 3D animation) and I'm having a bit of difficutly figuring out how to get a character to walk from point A to point B in a scene. There are some rigs that to move the character in the scene there is one selectable control to move the entire rig. However the only problem is that by doing that I can't get the feet to stay stationary to the ground as the rest of the model moves. I've tried creating objects at the areas where the characters feet touch the ground and parenting the foot to the object and keyframing it on and off. The only problem with that is, it creats a technical nightmare and it creates problems with animating the foot after it's been parented. Can anyone shed some light on how to do this properly?

Any help would be greatly apreciated, even if you can direct me to a useful tutorial. I've looked for some but everything is either not what I'm looking for, or explains how to do a walk cycle when the character is standing still, which I'm already aware of how to do.

Ok, I'm guessing you mean the root control that when you move it the full character stays in the same pose and is moved.

This is used for positioning the character at the very start of the animation. So once you have the initial place set, dont touch that controller again. Either turn off the visibilty to it, or just forget about it completely.

Moving forward can then be done through moving the feet, and positioning the torso etc for each pose.

I hope this helps out some.
