View Full Version : Character- Martial Arts Sorcerer
Gaboon 08-15-2005, 05:00 PM This is my attempt at a higher poly character than my others. He is a martial arts-type fire sorcerer. He is 3242 so far. I wanna shoot for around 5-6K for next gen. He is going to be about half burned, like scared but I wanna complete the model before I go in a tweek the burned areas. All C&C's a very much appreciated. Thanks :)

Hey thats lookin pretty cool! From the waist down he looks great, something about the position and shape of the arms is bugging me though, I am having trouble pinpointing exactly what it is though. Keep at it!

Hey!!...that's looking sweet...dig the proportions..nothing to crit so far apart from be careful of the posture as his back looks a bit to arched..but lookin good...look forward to see what his face looks like...

Looking good. From the waist down it's looking excellent.
His sides seem a bit odd, although it may just be his clothing that's throwing it off.
I look forward to seeing this one progress :D
like the others allready said, the proportions are really nice - two things are bugging me:
1 - the waist is terribly thin, especially when compared to the ribcage. It depends where you wanna go with style, but if you try to reach a semi realistic model this will look really weird.
2- even for a next gen model i really dont think his feet need to be modeled out that way. Your pumping alot of polys into each and every toe. Unless he is going to grab chopsticks with those toes i'd really recommend to not model them.

I like what you have done so far, i will admit the waist looks a little to thin.

That's a waist coat..not his rib cage :) ... I think It's a superb model so far.. everything about it...
The only thing I would point out is his arm pits, not sure how they will deform.

keep the toes man. tooo many models are too top heavy and when they have finely modelled faces and blocks of cheese for feet it spoils sense of illusion.
the arms look too low just move them so that they are aligned with themiddle of the shoulder and that should sort out. other than that loverly model

Wow, you guys all gave me some great feedback. All the comments were very helpful, thank you so much. Here is an update. You can see in the concept that he is badly burned. He is at 5186 Tris which is what I was going for. I'm pretty much done with the modeling for now. C&C's are always most appreciated. Thanks...

Great work on his head, is going to get some kind of weapon, like a sabel or is going to be hand to hand only. Keep up the good work

this guy's face is just so awesome, he reminds me of a cross between Manute fr Sin City, and the African Hunter from the first episode of Samurai Jack:thumbsup:
my crit would be that his vest seem to blend in a lot with his neck, making it look a bit like the shoulders are just badly attatched to the body, it may be the angle of the shots, but some more definition could help. i guess the sam with his stomach, in the drawing his belt is a lot bigger, and it looks like you started modeling the body that way and then changed your mind
are you going to model the nipples on his left arm?:applause:
awesome work.
i like the face in particular.
keep on goin.good work

nice modeling man :) this is turning into a rather cool project, can't wait to see some textures.

Well, I took him into ZBrush and I am loving it. This is the second guy I've worked on in ZBrush so I am loving this program! He seems to be turning out a bit older than I original design (once I started to put in wrinkles, i was having too much fun and went a bit wrinkle nutz). I know its not a good thing to change something post design but I like him a bit older. After doing most of the nonburned part, I realized that I should have modeled it mirrored and then put the burns on rather than sculpting both halves completely separately. Oh well, live and learn. All your guys' comments and crits are very appreciated as usual :)

man, this character has so much style
that face looks so awesome, and the mesh is very clean, there are a few spots that could be optimised a bit (around the middle of the chest) but nothing major.
anyway ...
oh and that ZBrushing is coming alond nicely

Probably not. I might rig him, but this is just a model for my portfolio.

Yo Gaboon,
He's looking sweet, can't wait to see the final product. I would also love to see him animated- if animation isn't your thing (as its not mine either), I'm sure you can find an animator willing to play around with him; if it looks good, could help sell your reel. Of course, if it looks bad, it could trash it completely.
Keep it up!!

Kick ass idea
I'm curious as to how you've modeled the legs, as the sarong (was going to say skirt...) appears to be attached to the legs. In my opinion this might cause some issues if you animated him. As the mid section of the sarong would have to stretch with the leg movement; this might cause some unsightly texture smearing as the model moves.

Well, I finally got more time to work. I wanted to establish the major geometry before going in with the alpha brushes to do the fine texturing, which Ill have to actually learn to do. I spent yesterday researching contracture burns on medical sites (no appetite the whole day :().
Simon- that is a really good point that I hadn't thought of, thank you. I think Im going to need to separate his legs a bit from his sarong in the intrest of animation.
Thank you guys for all the great comments and crits :)

Well, I re-imported it into ZB as one piece. Here are some pics of what Ive been doing. This might just end up as a high-poly model for my portfolio instead of a normal-mapped character as I think I might have made some errors. We'll see. C&C's are most appreciated, thanks...

Very, very nice man...it's lookin sweet...the rotting arm is real nice touch, it should transfer nicely to the low polygon mesh...

Done with ZBrushing. I'm pretty happy with it but I wanted to get some opinions before I move on as I've gotten some great help from you guys so far. All comments and criticisms are very much appreciated. Next step- texuring :)

Nice work Gaboon!
We miss ya at EA, hope things are going well for you. Model's looking pretty sweet. Love the alpha brushes on his stubble, dig the scarring. the only thing that still bothers me is his impossibly small waist. It's a little late in the game now, but that's really all i got. he should look incredible once he is normal mapped and textured.
keep it up, and drop me a line let me know whats going on!
TJ
PS: finally got my demo finished- ill try to post it asap.
