Wanted to post an update of my troll model- almost through texturing the skin, have a bunch of seams that need cleaning before reaching for the 3D Paint Tool. Open to any crits/comments- Just don't hassle me about the ugly checker texture on his armor- haven't gotten to that yet!!:)

Boots will be rusted when complete (hopefully), armor will have spec/displacement maps. Done in Maya 6.5. Thanks for any comments!

If you post a wire shot, people can give you some technical crits, otherwise its kinda hard...

Haha, sorry Deadboy. At least 3 of them were probably me. I usually pop on here, open all the new threads in tabs and go through 'em. I comment where I can.

My initial crits are just that it's pretty hard to see.
Maybe post a render on a lighter background, light/50% grey maybe, and maybe avoid lighting that gives you black areas on your model. So like, a second light source coming from the other side, or something. That'd just make it easier for people to see.

And yep, some wires would be good and we can critique your model.

Hey Kizza,

You're absolutely right- it was late, i was on my tenth cup of coffee, and i just popped off a few quick JPEGS without thinking. I'll replace them with something easier to see tonight when i get back from work. As for the wireframes, they are on another thread- but I attached them below to make things easier.

This one was just to get a critique on the texture work so far. But feel free to rip apart whatever you need to :) BTW, love the Captain Tinylegs and Gir models! Hope to hear back from ya...

He has no ears! :) I know your going for a cartoony style I am just messin.
If you looking for a crit on the texture work I think its still a bit early on since it looks like your just starting. I noticed some rust type layering you did on the skin. I personaly would do that later on in the texture process. I personaly add color later on in the texture process too. Or maybe start with a color less saturated so you can fill in your tones. You may want to flesh out the tonal range of the muscles and stuff first before you do lots of layering / color effects like wrinkles, scales, marks, pimples, scares ...etc.

Thanks for the crit, FatherGlory-

Actually the reason he's (her's? It's?) got no ears is because I figured no obligatory troll character would be complete without a helmet. And since it will be covering his ears...i didn't think he'd miss them.

As for the scales, do you have any tips for making a realistic scale texture w/ PhotoShop? Or know where I can find a tutorial to start me off? I've been searching for a good one, but so far no dice and he needs a little something to complete the look. I'm still adding in the muscle refinement, but it's a slow process. The "mud/rust" layer will be set on top of everything once everything is done, it just helps me visualize the final product.

Thanks for all your help!

As far as scales go use lots of referene. I did a google image search reptile skin and found lots of good photo's.

I made a little tutorial tonight since I am more visual person for tips. Many times I can't find good scale ref so sometimes I use bark and make texture bases to be able to use the clone tool to use them on area's of my characters. It helps to use lots of texture bases in your personal library but for this tutorial I only used the 2 photo's. Here is quick aproach.

Here is the .PSD if you care to see all the layers. http://www.digital-machine.org/web/misc/SnakeTextureTest.zip

Wow! Thanks, man- I was expecting you to refer me to learning-maya.com or something like that, not a full fledged tutorial w/ screenshots and a psd file. Many thanks, you rock:buttrock:

Will keep you posted as things progress!!
