View Full Version : Character: Nausicaa
KrisWood 08-14-2005, 09:49 PM Hello, this is my first post here, and my first (nearly) completed character model so please have mercy. :)
http://www.slothworks.com/kw/wip/naucomp1.jpg
This latest WIP of mine is Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, modeled after the manga version of the character. I'm making her purely as a portfolio piece / for the fun and learning of it, and she will eventually be imported to UT2004.
Currently she is fully 90% done with the modeling phase (needs more polies on the hips and shoulders, I'll also be redoing much of the face as she looks angry from the front and I'd like her to have movable eyes), fully UV'd (what there is of her so far anyway), and I estimate about 50% done with the texture (just needs some details all around and an actual texture for the hair instead of a max material).
To see her animated (default character studio walk cycle) click here:

Any comments and crits would be greatly appreciated. :)

looking good.
im a keen fan of studio Ghibli so its nice to see a cool model.
need to see a wire mesh to crit the polys!
but texture layout looks good from wahat i can see. the trouble with modelling cel animated characters is that they have little detail. (due to drawing times) so see if you can dredge up a cocept drawing or something to give the texture more detail.

One of the reference images I was working from:

i'm not sure what the policy is on posting copyrighted images but in interests of giving proper credit, this image was scanned in from the Nausicaa artbook, and is a watercolour by Hayao Miyazaki. It depicts the manga version of the character as opposed to the movie version.

Could you post a wire of this. it looks like the waist dosnt have enough topology. tis looking good tho it would be easier to tell if the angle were a little bit more regular (front, back, side, 3Quater)
looking forward to updates :)

Edit: And to answer the crits so far, I know she needs more polies around the shoulders and the hips, if you look at the animation in the first post you can see some rather wonky deformations there. I think I know how to fix the hips but could anyone give some suggestions on the shoulders? Also the face I think needs some work but i can't put my finger on it....

Hey nice Model Kris !!
How about some bigger, bouncier boobs? :bounce:

She's currently at 4960 triangles, mostly in the head, hands, and bendy parts, though there are way too many at the feet now. She hasn't been optimized at all so I'm not too worried, my target is 4000 triangles and I think it should be easy enough to trim down to that. The reason there are so many in the breasts is that when she was lower poly the sillhouette had some odd hard edges at some angles. It should be addressed though when I get to optimization i think.
Does anyone have any suggestions for improving the loops around her shoulders for animation, or for getting rid of the angry look on her face?
Edit: Thanks, but the boobs will not be getting any larger and probably not much bouncier as I'm trying to stick to the manga and to a lesser extent the movie. :p

the boobs definatly have wayyy too much detail, lol i think miyazaki designed her when he was in his 20s that i guess is why she has enormous gezonga's XD got an art book last time i was in france, ya gotta lov ghibli's stuff. One thing i'd say is u seem to be using some N-gons ((back of the boots) which i'd avoid try n stick to Quads n tri's
