I'd like to learn how to setup an environment, write a simple shader using Xcode 2.1 and compile it in OS X 10.4 (Tiger) through Xcode or using GCC. I don't know if I'm looking in the wrong places, but I have a hard time finding out how to setup my environment and how to compile.

I've got Java programming experience but no experience in setting up an OS X based C/C++ environment. I have followed the steps in the Alias docs on how to setup the devkit for writing maya plug-ins. Running the "make" command in the devkit folder seems to compile just fine, so I guess I successfully set that environment up. I'm not sure though, if there has to be additional environment paths set up in order to compile mr shaders.

I'd be very happy if someone could point me in the right direction or maybe even give me a quick step-by-step on setting up my environment, writing a very simple example shader and how to compile it into something usable. :)

Tom Cowland has helped me convert some of my shaders to OSX.
Maybe he can help you.
