View Full Version : The Island
Chems 08-13-2005, 11:53 PM So I thought it would be another action packed non stop kinda thing with some tiny story line. But it wasnt, I love action, but this had a really slow beginning, something I actually like and I found the innocents of the characters really well portrayed. The story line, with out spoiling has twists and turns to make it intresting and a very human side to it all. I thought, ahhh cloning same old same old, but it wasnt. The action parts where excellent, some amazing CG as always and a good olde dose of Hollywood surviability.
What impressed me more than anything thou was the future setting, its not to whack into the future, but more grounded in today with better technology mixed with the old. Intresting shots to watch out for, the classic Volvo S70 (not even the new version) appears in the film I had a chuckle at that (does the warranty still run till 2050?)
As for the Scarlett Johansson, well that was a really nice role she played, being very innocent and naive. Also of course, she was lovly to look at.
So overall, Id recommend this to people as a good action flick with a depth not quite equal to the original Matrix, but far better than the later 2 Matrix films.

I haven't seen it (yet) but one thing I've heard from multiple sources is that apparently the movie is better than the critics say. Sometimes movie critics just want to see someone like Michael Bay fail, and are eager to say things that will drive someone away from one of his movies. Giving away what the Island is (or isn't) was one of the spoilers that I saw on most of the reviews, and that alone seems to be something that has been hurting box office.

i saw this film, and enjoyed it for the most part... The flying bikes were incredible.. and the movie as a whole was solid...but something about Michael Bay's style I really don't like or understand. I feel like I'm watching an MTV video.. but he does have amazing visual skills, especially with color. So I have to give him props even though I don't really dig his style. I would have rather seen Terry Gilliam or Ridley Scott direct this film.. cause I think I would dig their vision of the future better.
I think the other VFX filled summer blockbusters were better over all.. ROTS, War of the Worlds, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory... imho ;)

no way in hell was the FX in charlie and the chocolate factory better than The Island.

I just thought it was a better movie, but that's cause I'm a big fan of Tim Burton's style. I'm not talking about just the FX.

I really must see it this week as it looks like it could be a modern day Logan's Run. Complete with silly body suits! :bounce:
Well So far this summer - The Island hits the number 1 spot for me - it definitely has been over looked by the critics...the cinema was half full (half empty - you decide) which was shocking...and I dig M.Bay's stlyle - the cinematography in his film is Ace. I love his choice of colours, his compositions - mise en scene. Then to top it off, he produces some very exciting actions pieces - I think this film is definitely his first to actually tackle a good story as apposed to just relying on action (Maybe this has to do with using a different producer?) - This films concept and excution sits next to Bladerunner for me. The cast was a great choice, and both Ewan and Johanson slipped straight into these characters, and made me give a shit about what happens to them.
The (spolier word - C***e) factory was amazing!! How did they pull that off I would love to know! The camera moves so freely through the building, it makes one wonder how much of this was actually built - Some excellent visionaries there!
Best: Ewan and Johanson slowly discovering and awkening to their attraction and desire to protect one another, as the film progresses; Female - Male bond.
Worst: Why do they always have to add 1 scene that yanks me right out of the story - this time I'm reffering to the falling Logo!! That was an awful scene, and both our main characters would have died!! Silly.
DVD will be on my shelf!

I agree with geo5sf, Im also not realy a fan of Michael Bays style of film making.
Id give it 5/10, entertaining enough, but nothing that great, the story was pretty pradictable and borrowed heavly from other films (which i didnt like to much)
overall I liked Charlie and the Chocolate Factory much much more (and i even thought the effects where better in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory)

Yeah totally agree, but hollywood has to have its bit of madness, I always thought that people who feel off buildings died of a heart attack before they ever hit the ground. Not something thats nice to mull over after 9/11, specially with the firefighters interviews released this week.
Id say to anyone with half an open mind go see this one, and enjoy it.

Heart attack before smacking straight into the ground?
How does one go about putting this into a scientifically-proven test? :argh:

People have survived falling out of airplanes.... and buildings. :D I don't think 'heart attack' is common on the coroners report for those who do not. ;)
If the average human heart was as fragile as that, we'd all be dropping dead on fairground rides and the like.
yeah, heart attacks aren't usually caused by fright unless you already have a preexisting heart condition.

apart from my own personal intense dislike of this film, any australian going to see this film will have to have a chuckle at the Qantas commercial ending. It gave me a good laugh at the end of a bad film, especially when my friend started singing "I've been to cities..."

I do want to see this film, but it's more a renter for me then having to go to the theater. I love the gold tones the film seemed to have from some of the trailers, I like that visual style. I don't know about Michael Bay, I've never seen one of his flicks, so I'm not biased on that yet. Although the reports of product placement seem annoying.
How's its soundtrack? Is it ones of those non-descript, forget it as soon as you leave kind, or something with a prominent tune (like I, Robot or Catwoman?)

All I have to say is that this movie was a hell of a lot better than I had expected it to be. Michael Bay may not make anything with a lot of meaning to it (far from it), but he certainly knows how to keep the audience.
...well, okay, so maybe he screwed up with Bad Boys II just a tad. ;)

About the heart attack thing, I kind of understood it to be such a mental shock that the body responds with a heart attack, the same way you pass out from massive pain. Probably just urban legend thou.

easy, pay volenteers. Don't tell them what you're doing, instead say you're doing research on the fear of heights. Go up on a skyscraper, load them up with sensors, then push them off the roof onto a disguised airbag that looks like the pavement. :D

The movie is in no way really good (or special), and I found the commercial sponsors (Microsoft, Chevrolet, Nokia) really annoying, but most of the shots were pretty nice. As were the colors. I think I'll give it a 6/10.
Unfortunately Micheal Bay wanted to make an action movie too badly, which is why the timing of the shots was off quite a few time. A shame. It could easily have been a 7, even with this simplistic story.

I must have missed something here. Is this a quote from something?
Why does this scenario sound more and more like something from a Gary Larson cartoon. :D

The all caps smell like Death. The grim reaper-like person from the Discworld novels to be precise
