View Full Version : Obsession: Asian Beauty
Shady_Lady 11-01-2002, 06:31 AM Hi Everybody!
I am a newcomer in the CGTalk and 3D CG field. As a freelance graphic designer, I am keen on drawing & visual art.
I started learning Max at home from th e beginning of 2002, about 9 months till now. This is my first study project ( for self-promotion only ).
Because I am not working in the 3D CG industry, so my work was amateur. Comments and critique are highly appreciated! Thanks a lot!
Something about my work
The digital lady is not human. She gets red pupils, redheaded, elf-liked ears and pointed canine teeth. She comes from the World called "ASURA".Buddhist believe that there are six categories in our world. ASURA is one of them. They are the creatures of half god half demon, or fallen angel.I don't know how to translate it accurately. They like fighting very much. That's why I give my character an aggressive style and military look. Her name is Shady Asura. She is a sniper officer in Asura Army. I'm now planning more charming female characters in her society. Please wait to see.I like Original Work, but also want to wow people with realistic clone of image, so I imitate the true human face. I put a lot of efforts in designing my character, adding interesting idea into her clothing and accessories. It is difficult to find the similar head elsewhere. This is my drawing style and I hope you will be enjoyed.
PS: I am also the fan of Stahlberg, he is the master of character modeling.

The model is gr8, but its 2 much acessories. Loose the text in the bottom left corner and the pearl-like stuff on the neck..
edit: Lose the bambi-image in the hair too. yuck. :thumbsdow

This is looking great, love the red eyes (I also made a female character with red eyes, and called her "Ruby.") All the accessories, makeup and tatoos give her alot of character and style.
The main thing that bugs me is the lack of shadows. I think it will all come together once you add them. Great work so far, and good luck!

the bum map on the face looks to high and the area whre the lips start needs to be blured a bit other than that looks good

Anybody notice the Relationships between the Scripts behind the blue background and the "Ring" on the character?
Great work! The specularity in her eyes looks too dull and blurred imho. Makes them look dry. Could be sharpened up a bit.

Why does it take ages for this thread to load?
After 10 minutes I still can't see any pics!
How big are they?

Yeah, you might want to lose the One Ring inscription, from the LOTR movie. It would be better to use one of your own designs.

I've often wondered what an anime person would look like if they were actually realistic instead of stylized drawings-- that's IT right there! And it's just plain cool!! I agree with the other folks about there being just plain too darn many dangly bits, though. And her eyes could use a little more depth... maybe there's too much reflection on them or something, but the pupils aren't black enough. Looking forward to seeing her looking fierce!

100% made in HK. I graduated from the Hong Kong Polytechnic Univerity, studying Diploma of Design.
Her fierce look is cool in my mind. But the tweaking of facial expression by hand is really tedious...Great artists like Stahlberg, Syomka, Alceu Baptistao have done a marvellous job on these. I will try my best to practise.

hehe~I want to study in City University's SCM in the future(If I can...wa diu Im still repeating CE lol,I hate IVE :p),they teach Maya but I like 3dmaxs more,im learning 3dsmax (attracted by those incredibly realistic 3d works)and trying to make my own CG girl(BoBo~~),wahaahahah...
I just see your work looks more "Japanese Style",I've seen too many non-asian confusing between Japanese/Hong Kong people...
Obviously you must be a Japanese culture+Punk fans la,haha.

Obsession? Yeah I got a bit of an obsession too with asian chicks. My last gf was korean. We broke up about 2 weeks ago. I'm still hurting from it. I'm hoping we'd get back together, but it's really up to her weather that happens or not. Anyway, enough about me. You have a very stunning model here. I love the hair. What did you use to make it? I've been trying to make hair for one of my female models for the longest time and I've gotten nowhere. Once again, great work. Keep it up. Damn I love this stuff.

I learn Max at Home and only a small portion of skills was acquired, very few experience in using Maya, it seems more stable and able to handle a large project. Anyway, Max is more user-friendly for beginners.
I use ShagHair, it is the only hair plugin for max, but Sasquatch will soon be released, it seems better. The hairstyle is composed of solid object and shaghair, it's difficult to make hair tangled by plugin and the pigtail is also object. You may find more in the wireframe shot.

Thanks Cam, rockzen and Everybody who have clicked this thread, the face texture is simple cause I don't have much time to dig in the Material Editor in Max. They're the most common Mapping only(Diffuse, Specular Level, Bump). The output will be more satisfactory if you have time to explore the mapping channels. Thanks!

in my humble opinion:
Too much props
did you forget shadows ?
This is FIRST Class:thumbsup: the only critic I could make is the filtrum between the nostril and the top lip could be more pronounced but still a great piece of work, please do some more !!and i'm glad to see your a fan of Steven Starberg the Master:wavey:
Sorry shady in my rush to heap praise i forgot to say how good the hair is and oh yes keep the jewelry i think its great:bounce:

Thanks NowhereMan, rusky, Abe, onurbasaldi. ah, I'm sorry somebody cannot load the wire shot, the host maybe overload.....
I realize my model got many props, but she dresses in her own way, the same happen in the ancient African tribes...., lighting and shadow is the main problem I can't tackle, the nostril edge seems too sharp , the eyes haven't enough reflection and you can see the seam around the neck. Originally I block this pit by a circular neckwear, but the design not look good & has changed.....Thank you for all comments!

the tattoo on her arm is amazing, really seems to be inside the skin, very good work

11-11-2002, 02:03 PM
Thanks Rikkimaru & Solesurvivor. I still have much to learn to become a good character designer, everyone will succeed in fulfilling himself if he has the passion to do....I'm now learning to setup the model in Character Studio, so the tattoo arm you see is the top view done before. I know nothing about tattoo, just got reference from magazine, and the Jap style is my favourite. The tattoo pattern is not formal, they're composed from different style. Drawing the pattern is a Nightmare, I do it on marker pad and scan to PC . Stretching is still a main problem for such complex pattern....aaaah...!
ps: I've added a new pic in the 2d artwork thread.

well, im glad there is such a wide response of praise on this thread, as it is well deserved, but im really sorry if this is deemed offensive..............but she doesnt look asian at all. The facial features just dont seem right.
there is a unique proportion to asian women......very unique and very beautiful:
http://www.wowbikini.com/a183.jpg
http://www.wowbikini.com/a83.jpg
http://www.wowbikini.com/a207.jpg
very distinctive.
http://www.chinadv.com/gallery/photo/2002101213501123790.jpg
see the difference.
I think you have done a GREAT job with this model and image, but work on the facial features a lil more and make it look even better :)
Happy Rendering!!

Thanks Gentle Fury & facial, to my knowledge, the term "Asian" applied to all people living in Asia, from FarEast(China, Japan...), acrossing India, to the NearEast(Turkey...). Gentle Fury , the stuff you post are the pop girl from Taiwan & Japan, maybe your ideal Asian Beauty. I realize that she doesn't look come from FarEast, in my own interpretation of Asian Beauty, she's an Asian Hybrid .
I'm not a portrait painter, I don't know the unique proportion to asian woman. I'm sorry her facial features may disturb some people cause she get the very deep Double Eyelid, an rarely seen feature, but does exist.
I'm now working on the Face of another Asian Girl, She's 100% girl from FarEast(HongKong)!!

Very Beautyfull, Here comes my opinion...
I would remove most the jewelry because it isn't adding something special to the picture... The make-up btw looks good... But the scull an ring neckless make it look over done and the chain that goes to her ear and so one.. If I were u I would design a very beautyfull set of kinky ( or something like that ) earrings and keep it with only that...You can try to get her in a warrior mood with tatoo's or warpainting stuff.... Oh and before I forget, I JUST LOVE THE COLOUR OF HER HAIR :)
BTW.. Are her ears pointy or am I just tired:hmm:

That's cool, She looks like so fasion!I like she's eyes, and the design about she's left hand. It's a standard HongKong beauty, I think. By the way, she's month has a little resemble to Faye Wong's.
But, I think you have to do more for she's ornament. You see that its don't look so coordinated. It maybe kill your beauty.:bounce:
Shady_lady, you come from china, right? Me too, glad to see a chinese in CGTalk. I'm a new member in here, I love so much the 3D Design. That is so much more means for me, I don't know how can tell you. In a word, I will study that in a later time in University. So, glad to know you.

oic, i see lots of ppl who are freelancers also.
i am also a self-taught in 3D and there is still a long way to go.....
ar one more thing, do you compose the accessories by PS or they are real geometries of the same scene?

02-08-2003, 07:37 PM
:buttrock: Your character looks awesome. I like everything about it. As far as all the crits about to much accesories and crap, forget it. That is a trait i guess. Like mr. T or something, makes him stand out. Anyway nice work hope I get that good soon.
Shady_Lady
02-09-2003, 03:57 AM
As you saw from the wire shot, all the stuffs are the real geometries. Since that's only the portrait render, I don't consider to compose them by alpha channel....
The no. of polygon count in the upper body, more than 400,000 and about 100 ref spline in ShagHair......
Thanks.:D

Great work, I really like her, and she has a unique story behind her as well, which adds to the peice. My only crits are that for some reason, I am bothered by the wings of the nose, I think they should come out a little bit more and not be so flat. The ears, even for elf-like ears, need a little bit more work, the hair also needs some more work.

This is the render test of her smiling face in default lighting,
I found it's tedious to tweak the precise expression, but I'll try.....
the modeling of her teeth is horrible, and I'll probably do it again.

Hing dai, love the tattoos. Remember, when making your character smile make sure the eyes are smiling as well or else the overall smile will look unnatural and forced. They're almost there in your test shot, but push the expression just a bit more to get it just right.
