View Full Version : Resident Evil/Silent Hill inspired enviroment
Yak Rak 08-12-2005, 11:22 PM Hi
I'm new to these forums.
Wonder if anyone could give a max newbie some feedback/tips on my 2nd attempt at an enviroment. i'm trying to do somthing inspired by Resident Evil 4/Silent Hill. At the moment its around 6500 triangles and using 3X512X512 and about 10 256X256 tp's.
I'm a bit stuck on how to light this, at the moment i'm using one direct light which is the main source and an omni light for the fire and thats it. Does it look wrong? what other obvious improvements should I make?
thanks for time guys.

Heh I can't really give any advice but I do like it nice spooky feel ta it..
Only things that kinda bothers me are the textures.
The floorin' that the shed sits on looks close to the same color of the sidings ta me.. hmmm actually glancing back it looks lighter. The floor would have had water porin' on it ..
ppl walking on it so (reminder: I am no prof. heh) it would look more natrual for the floor ta look more worn than the walls...
(worn down grayish {wood turns gray if its been rained on after like 20 years with no sealent} even though gray bein' neutral dunno how it would look with current colors ....
worn down brown maybe) Im seein too much yellow on it. Takin' some of that yellow away might help it look deader (spookier).
also the railin' texure kinda bothers me ...it look like ta me that its the second brightest color on your map so when I look at the screen my eyes go directly to the railing other than the darker shack which imo just seems should be more important than the railing.
Although both things that I said so far might be fixed with corrected lighting. ...
just something ta look at .. heh
post a pic up after you get the lighting up ..good lightin might help with those two things but only one way ta find out ^.^
Also one more texure thing... heh .. looks like you just placed the same tex. all over the railing so for the railing it won't really matter if you darkin' it abit more ta take attention away from it ( also so you can still just paste the same tex. without goin' throu the trouble of have two tex for railing^.^ ) anyways my point... is because it looks like you can have seperate tex. for the fence posts maybe you can add some dirt ..or mud at the base of the fence posts on your tex. map... they look abit too clean ta be out in the mud in the middle of nowhere.
I really can't help ya on how ta save poly count or anything
hope someone helps ya with the lighting also
Awesome work man keep it up ^.^

Looking good. How's about puting some holes (removed panels if they are panel) in the roof exposing some rafters in the roof?
Keep it up :)

Thanks to both for replying:) I will def take your suggestion Dark Solace and correct those textures a bit more, will post more when done, cheers!
Oh and Mindrot, your enviroment work is amazing!! very inspiring stuff indeed, just wondering though what kind of lighting set up do you use to achieve such a realistic effect?

reminds me of the level you play in the RE4 demo for GameCube. Verry well done. maybe try to see what it would look like with particle flames instead of a image? Worth a shot.
The close up shot looks MUCH better than the aerial shots. Basically because the environment around it is so underdeveloped. You should post more 1st person shots or however you plan on having it display in-game.
