EDIT: JUNE 5, 2006:

PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT PHOTOBUCKET DOES NOT ALLOW NUDE IMAGES TO BE HOSTED, ARTISTIC OR OTHERWISE.

This has been posing a problem for many of our members. Please report and link here posts containing missing / broken links due to Photobucket's new nudity rule.

I am currently looking into other image hosting options. Please stay tuned. I would advise people not to contact Photobucket, as this will only draw attention to your account.

For those of you who are new to CGTalk, or would like to know how to host your images and post them online, I've put together a walk-thru of using www.photobucket.com (http://www.photobucket.com), an image hosting site which is free (up to a certain capacity) for its users.

Here goes :)

1. Go to www.photobucket.com (http://www.photobucket.com). Click on the "Sign up now" button.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/rebeccak5/Photbucket%20Walk%20Thru/Photobucket_Walk-Thru-01.jpg

2. Fill in the appropriate information in the form which appears. Then click "Register".

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/rebeccak5/Photbucket%20Walk%20Thru/Photobucket_Walk-Thru-02.jpg

3. Fill in the appropriate information on this screen. UN-Check the first Ad checkbox. Click "No thanks" to the second Ad. Click Submit.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/rebeccak5/Photbucket%20Walk%20Thru/Photobucket_Walk-Thru-04.jpg

4. You should receive the following message:

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/rebeccak5/Photbucket%20Walk%20Thru/Photobucket_Walk-Thru-05.jpg

Rebeccak

5. Check your email for the Photobucket Registration notification. Follow the link to activate your account.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/rebeccak5/Photbucket%20Walk%20Thru/Photobucket_Walk-Thru-06.jpg

6. You should get the following screen:

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/rebeccak5/Photbucket%20Walk%20Thru/Photobucket_Walk-Thru-07.jpg

7. Now when you go to www.photobucket.com, you can log in with your user name and password to get to this screen:

Rebeccak

8. You can add sub-"albums" to your www.photobucket.com account simply by typing your album name in the dialog box under "Add Sub Album". If you don't create a sub album, your pictures just remain on a generic main page. It is useful to use albums to keep photo files in tidy categories, for example: "Orthographic Drawings", etc.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/rebeccak5/Photbucket%20Walk%20Thru/Photobucket_Walk-Thru-09.jpg

9. You must CLICK on the SUB-ALBUM NAME to actually put pictures into the album once you've created it. Otherwise, you will just be uploading pictures to your generic main page.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/rebeccak5/Photbucket%20Walk%20Thru/Photobucket_Walk-Thru-10.jpg

10. Once in your sub-album, you can browse to images stored on your local hard drive. Images will be uploaded to www.photobucket.com and assigned a URL. Therefore, once you have uploaded your images, you need not keep your uploaded images in the same place on your local hard drive, as there is no direct link to them.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/rebeccak5/Photbucket%20Walk%20Thru/Photobucket_Walk-Thru-12.jpg

Rebeccak
08-12-2005, 07:30 PM
11. Once you have browsed to and selected your image file on your local hard drive, click submit. The image is uploaded from your local hard drive to the remote server of www.photobucket.com and assigned a unique URL.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/rebeccak5/Photbucket%20Walk%20Thru/Photobucket_Walk-Thru-14.jpg

12. Here you can see that your image has been uploaded and assigned a unique URL by www.photobucket.com. COPY the URL (Ctrl +C) before you go back to CGTalk.com to post your image/s.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/rebeccak5/Photbucket%20Walk%20Thru/Photobucket_Walk-Thru-15.jpg

Rebeccak

13. Now back at CGTalk.com on whichever thread you wish to reply to, click the "Post Reply" button that appears at the bottom of every individual's post.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/rebeccak5/Photbucket%20Walk%20Thru/Photobucket_Walk-Thru-16.jpg

14. Click the "Align Center" icon if you wish your image/s or text to appear centered in the page. Hint: you may want to type text first, so keep that on "Align Left" and then click the "Align Center" icon to center your images.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/rebeccak5/Photbucket%20Walk%20Thru/Photobucket_Walk-Thru-17.jpg

15. Click the "Insert Image" icon to insert your image. A dialog box will appear into which you PASTE (Ctrl + V) the URL of the image you have uploaded to www.photobucket.com.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/rebeccak5/Photbucket%20Walk%20Thru/Photobucket_Walk-Thru-18.jpg

Rebeccak
08-12-2005, 07:32 PM
16. PASTE the URL into the dialog box that appears after you have clicked the "Insert Image" icon. Click "Ok". (Note: you can only insert one image at a time).

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/rebeccak5/Photbucket%20Walk%20Thru/Photobucket_Walk-Thru-19.jpg

17. VOILA!! Your image appears in the "Post Reply" editor. Note: You must type some text in order to post an image. (It may be text as simple as "Here it is").

Once you are happy with the placement of your image and text, click "Submit Reply".

Hi Rebccak,

I'm having problems with images displaying correctly when i post my work here. Here's what i mean - http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=304796&highlight=viking

My images are all orignally 1200 x 900 pixels but for some reason when i uploaded it to photobucket, the images are only 359 x 252  After following the thread on how to post images, the images turned out to have shrunk in size. Also, photobucket states that images larger than 512KB are automatically resized; does this has anything to with the images not displaying propoerly?

I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction as to how i can get images shown in their actual sizes.

Julian

Rebeccak
02-03-2006, 07:30 PM
Julian,

Yep, Photobucket will actually do funny things to your images if they are over 1MB ~ I've never had one of mine resized, but maybe if the image is too large it will do that ~ the thing to do is to just make a copy of your original image (you don't want to resize that) and save for web through Photoshop ~ Ctrl + Alt + Shift + Save ~ or File > Save for Web ~ if you reduce the percentage of image quality, you will see that in the lower left corner of the save for web dialogue box that the file size is correspondingly reduced.

Also, make sure that you have in your User Profile settings > the display images box checked.

Another thing is that programs like ZoneAlarm often block you from seeing certain images. If you have that, you may have to temporarily shut it off in order to see all images properly.

Hope that helps. If not, let me know. :)

Cheers,

Rebeccak, thx for the advice!

Yeah, sometimes photobucket does weird stuff. Anyway, i've got the image problem
sorted out. For some strange reason (or is it me...), photobucket didn't refresh/update the
new images i uploaded and instead displayed the old images that i've deleted from the hard
drive.
I've checked my user settings, saved for web in photoshop and all's good. :bounce:

Thanks again!

Rebeccak
02-04-2006, 03:24 AM
juln,

No problem. :)

One thing that I've found with Photobucket ~ if you upload an image, then delete the image, and upload a new version of that image with the same name, the old image will be retained. What I do now is to save a version of the new image with a different name ~ say the first image was whatever.jpg, I call the new one whatever_1.jpg and then upload it to photobucket BEFORE deleting whatever.jpg. I don't have any problems this way, but if I don't do it this way, I always get the old image.

Cheers, :)

Try that and let me know if it works.

Ok, sorry if this is obvious but...
You lost me on the "use photobucket" deal. I'm guessing that is a way for basic users to be able to represent more than the five images that can be posted to their individual gallery yes?
So if I decided to upgrade to a full CGS membership I wouldn't have to jump through the hoops? Because then I could post unlimited directly here.

<---obviously new but mamanged to post a pic to my gallery...or portfolio...whichever it is...that distinction is still a wee bit unclear too. :)

Hi there, no worries. :) Photobucket is an image host which I recommend to be used for CGTalk posting ~ you can use it to host images for CGPortfolio images, too, but only for extra images which you would want to post beneath your main image which you have uploaded to your CGPortfolio Gallery as closeups, or in your blog. For example, in my blog, I have posted images that I have hosted through Photobucket:

http://rebeccak.cgsociety.org/blog/

To post images in my blog, I have to use the tags and and paste the Photobucket URL of my image in between.

But in my Gallery, all of the images are uploaded directly through CGPortfolio from my computer:

http://rebeccak.cgsociety.org/gallery/

As a CGSociety member, I can upload an unlimited number of images, either directly from my computer, or hosted by an image host such as Photobucket. A free CGTalk member can upload 5 images ~ I don't believe you would be able to post images in your Gallery in any other way than by uploading them directly from your machine to CGPortfolio. If you want to show a lot of work, then it becomes worth it to upgrade to a paid CGSociety membership. It's definitely a great time to do so, due to CGPortfolio. :)

So if I decided to upgrade to a full CGS membership I wouldn't have to jump through the hoops? Because then I could post unlimited directly here.
Right. But don't confuse CGPortfolio with just the posting that you do on the main forums here. CGPortfolio is a website of it's own, with it's own rules. On CGTalk Forums, you can host and post as many images as you wish ~ using Photobucket or other image host service. You can also add images as attachments, but it's much better to host images as then people do not have to click on your image to see it. Images which are just plainly visible because they have been image hosted will receive much more attention.

<---obviously new but mamanged to post a pic to my gallery...or portfolio...whichever it is...that distinction is still a wee bit unclear too. :)
Ah, okay, I'll check it out. :)

Any more questions, please feel free to let me know. You should also activate your Private Message system through your User Control Panel at the top of the screen. That way, people through the site can communicate with you.

Cheers, :)

Hi and thanks for the image hosting tutorial!
I have a question though.
Do you know how it is possible to post large images?Everytime i tried to post something(at other sites, sorry)photobucket automatically resized it...All the files that i upload to photobucket are 72dpi.So why is that happening??
Thanks in advance.

Rebeccak
04-14-2006, 08:14 PM
Polonoid,

Photobucket will automatically resize any image that is over 1 MB in size. JPG images that are saved for web should usually be fairly small ~ typically when posting to web forums, you want your images to be no greater than 800 pixels wide anyway, so people don't have to scroll ~ it sounds as though you are trying to post huge images. Try reducing your image to 800 pixels wide at 72 dpi, and then saving your image for web, and you should be fine.

Cheers, :)

Hi ppl, photobucket is all nice and all, but it might be an idea to check out THIS (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=348896) link instead.
This site (ImageShack) is faster, no resizing, more options and you DONT have to REGISTER.

I also made a guide for uploading/downloading files like .rar and .3dm this site is also free, fast and dont need you do register. There are tons of adds, and the design sucks, but the service provided is fantastic, check it out HERE (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=348882).

Splinter,

It's only necessary to use the tags when posting close up shots to the Description area in the CGPortfolio. Are you trying to post images just to CGTalk, eg, the forums here, which you are on? :)

You may not have images enabled in your User CP settings.

Go to the top of the page where you will see a link for User CP. Go to User CP > Edit Options, then scroll down to Thread Display Options, and check:

I just found out the site I was getting hosted at is down I need a new host any suggestions? Is it just temporarily down? Sometimes sites go down for maintenance or something and are temporarily offline. That might be the case here perhaps? Might want to give it a day or so.

Rebeccak

Alternately, you could use photobucket and just place a black bar across the nude bits. :)

The site I was going to was posted right in this thread Tocpe (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=44584) site. imagehub.GeekFury.com (http://imagehub.geekfury.com/) and it looks like its a whole other site now. I'm thinking the host droped the site, my sketchbook thread has none of my art in it. I have copies of my stuff but I don't know where at on the two hard drives I have ,but the important thing is host for now.

I would use photobucket and putting a black bar that is a work around I didn't think they would allwo that. I might go with that but I would like to find a hosting place that would allow it and also not delet picture if no one clicks on them what do other people use or do they buy there own site if so how do they go about their own site with cost on bandwith and templets and such?

I would use photobucket and putting a black bar that is a work around I didn't think they would allwo that.Sorry to hear about your image host, I think the photobucket workaround is probably the easiest temporary solution until you have your own website. After uploading all my WIP images to my website and then linking them to no avail here, I did a test and discovered that if I link to an image on flickr.com, I can have it show up in the message.

http://www.pulpchicago.com/JinxxModel/Jinxx-26-081026-profile.jpg

( ^ example that doesn't show up for me, hosted on my website)

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/90/239618839_14ba56db9d_b.jpg

( ^ example that does work, hosted on flicker.com)

Is there any way to make images on a personal website work? I can't figure out why an image that shows up if I paste the URL directly into a browser won't work, but one from a commercial image hosting service does. Is this a firewall issue of some sorts? I've looked at the HTML and the one linked to the image on my website is a valid "img src=" tag.

P.eS., While I'm asking image posting/hosting questions, how do I get a thumbnail to show up in the new posts list?
