Sorry if this was already posted

Here-s my problem: I just upgraded from win nt /Max 3 to win2k /Max 4.
My system is a Athlon 1300@1400Mhz, geforce2GTS (emulated to quadro 2pro with softquadro and Maxtreme Drivers from Elsa).

The problem is in Max4 I have a very low frame rate in viewport, shaded or wireframe even if I have an object that has arround
50-60.000 faces.

The only thing I found that's solves the problem is applying a edit mesh modifier over the object (then the speed increse by far and I can manipulate with a good fps objects that have up to 400.000 faces).
I think the problem is that max4 see all the objects like poly not faced objects and I don't think by board hardware accelerate this...execpt the time I'm using mesh edit...but is irritating doing this every time...

Beleve me...it's very annoying seeing an object with 50.000 faces in max4 having the same performance in viewport like an object with 300.000 faces in max3.

I'll appreciate any sugestions , thanks.

I tend to have the same problems, but I use a mesh select at the top of the stack to speed it back up again (mesh select has less memory overhead than edit mesh)

When a mesh is subdivided (NURMS) - it's geometry takes a lot longer for max to throw around. The edit Mesh or mesh select tells max to treat the geometry as though it's collapsed, which speeds it up...

Another thing to look at is how you have your OpenGL set up... Got to the preferences/viewports and check the settings.

Try throwing around some primatives (boxes...etc) and see if this is still as slow.

I don't think that having mesh smooth in modifier stack is slowing thinks down becose in max3 I usualy had arround 10-15 modifiers and worked fine :) (lol I'm crazy :)

I think that mesh smooth from max 4 automatic changes the object (it dones't matter if the object is poly or mesh) in a poly object... and poly isn't hardware accelerated...(well at least on my board...I don't know if the hi end boards accelerate this)

But I don't know...in max 3 Mesh smooth had NURMS and they worked great...isn't a way to make this work in max 4 the same way ? a patch, a driver...I don't know...

AJ_23 I think the privites are working fine (as long as I don't use mesh smooth or turn to poly).

maybe its because your quadro 2 isnt a quadro 2????i've got an Elsa gloria 3 card and use the max extreme drivers and my viewport speeds are fast ...they are real slow when using open gl though...
