View Full Version : Building a new PC
Sp1ice 08-11-2005, 08:54 PM Here is what I am considering on building.. comments please.. I use Maya and Poser right now and have been evaluating XSI and Modo..
Motherboard BioStar NF4UL-A9
Processor AMD X2 3800+
Video X800XL 256MB PCIE
Memory 4GB Corsair
HDD 2 SATA 80 GB (have a server to off load projects when I am done)
Those are the main guts.. the only thing I am considering is instead of the X800XL getting the FireGL V3100 but I am not sure since I am still researching the differences in render times and such.

Biostar isn't a great brand anyways and that board really sucks. You're getting a PCI-E video card, so why do you still need the AGP?
Plus, AGP on a PCIE platform is crappy. IIRC, it's only given the bandwidth of 2 PCI slots, so basically just the bandwidth of a PCI-X slot. It is also missing a key AGP tech., the direct memory addressing, which allows direct access to the system memory for texture storage. Also, you'll need compatible cards for the AGP or you'll end up damaging the baord.
You're using Maya, don't buy an ATI card. Go nVidia and it will save you headaches. Get a 6800 GT or 7800.

I'd go with a ASUS A8N SLI Dlx or Premium. For a video card I'd go with 7800 GTX if your going to be doing CG work(though quadro may be better for Maya and XSI but some have got them to work on GeForce cards).

Ok.. thanks.. I understand the motherboard and have switched that to a Gigabyte.. (I will never buy another ASUS board as long as I Live and breath) but I was trying to keep the price of the Video card to around 350 so instead of the 7800 GT/X I would have to go with the 6800GT... is that still a better choice than the X800/X850 group of cards ? Most of the benchmarks I have seen do not really show that much of a difference.

Well flat out the 6800GT is faster then the X800XL you selected up there. Now on the high end the X800XTPE / X850XTPE might be faster then the 6800GT in some things (Games) but probley not 3D apps.

i would seriously recommend you to buy a DFI motherboard, they currently have top-notch mobos on the market. great overclocking capabilities, stability...you name it-->DFI's got it!
i agree with deathman and sweetdreamz, 6800 GT is better-->BFG!
cheers
