Hi all!

I am looking for ideas for a beam of light FX technique. I have a job that requires an interplanetary communication beam emanating from a planet and going across the galaxy to a space station.

I'm testing textures out (on a cylinder object inside a tube object). I'm hoping to get a glowing/falloff look on the outer tube and some kind of speeding light effect inside it. It's not looking so good right now.

Any tips?

Thanks.

By the way, I'm using Max 4.2.

Have you tried using a volume light effect instead?

Video Post might offer a solution or two.

You can loft the light path or something, and hit the material with a Lens Effect Glow... but I'll warn you... MAX's standard lens effect stuff is pretty icky, and you might not get the effect you want at all.

Use a Direct cylindrical light, with volume light, and a density of 10-50 on the fog. Then you can also animate the light stretchign out by animating the attenuation.

Using this effect quite successfully for some BEam weapon effects
