View Full Version : Opinions about Paint Deformation Usage
Hey folks,
My intention for this thread, is gettin to know about your opinions
about the Paint Deformation and the usability for your work / projects.
I know many people who say, that its only a feature which discreet has implemented, just to have - besides of the use / functionality.
How do you guys think about it.

I suppose the paint deformation allows to sculpt stuff more naturally, especially for organic models

I use zbrush though. Because I feel that paint deformation is like zbrush a little (but limited)
I also don't use it that much because I can get my computer to edit big mesh densities in max, so its obsolete for me, but if you don’t have something like zbrush then It could be handy to sculpt organic models in zbrush

I have tried it out serveral times for some projects and actually
i was not so satisfied.
For me, it seems too, that the viewport speed was not very
fast for hight res meshes. Perhaps its my pc but im not quite sure.
The idea is cool but i think it lacks in some areas.
At least its fine that it is there hehe...
The Zbrush point is absolutely right, you can never compare it to zbrushs paint deformer i think...

I think the comparisons to zbrush are a little unfair, zbrush is designed around this functionality and literally blows everything else out of the water, not just max.
Max's tool is there really for lo poly/cage work, where it's relatively small competent part of a much larger arsenal. The relax painting is quite handy IMHO.

Its definitley quite unfair to compare,
you can never compare it to zbrushs paint deformer i think...
as i said that before (perhaps not clear enough) there should / can not be a comparison between both.
Actually i wanted to dicuss about the Paint Deformer and the experience of other users... :)

I too find the paint relax to be handy.
Yes the tool is really too slow to be able to do zbrush type stuff with it. You sort of could do a similar hierarchical displacement paint thing with a stack of turbsmooths and edit polys, but it's really way too slow for that.
It's handy for knocking up a low res organic landscape. Much quicker than trying to pull loads of verts up and more interactive than trying to do it with displacement maps.
It's alright I guess. Not the best thing since sliced bread, but has its moments. Zbrush is great at that sort of stuff, but it's useful to be able to the odd bit directly in max.

Yeah i used the paint deform very often for this purpose and
i was very satisfied, mostly for a rough design then goin to tweak the vertex/faces.
Another purpose perhaps : Modeling rough veins for animals , monsters , humans ...

yeah, i suppose that would work ok for simpler stuff.. you would probably have to split mesh in pieces to get the ammount of geometry needed for such things then maybe generate normal map from it.. but i would rather do that kind of work in zbrush..
as said above it's useful for quick terrains and similar things.. but where painting geometry really comes in handy is painting relax.. i just love it!
