Hmmm. Does that mean I can run OS X on an AMD processor? I would even pay Apple to be able to do that

From what I read, it only runs through VMWare and you won't have any usable graphic card drivers, is that correct?
I'm interested in a Tiger x86 version that I can multiboot with Windows like a Linux distribution, but the current thing looks like a hotchpotch hacker version to me.

From what I understand you'll be able to legitimately do that as long as you buy Apple hardware (when they ship boxes with Intel processors).

But I want something legit...and that supports my hardware.
I hope this will put some pressure on Apple, that can't be bad for them right?

I want the same thing. I don't want to run a hacked OS on my machine that doesn't have proper hardware support and stuff like that. If there's an easy, direct way to multiboot Tiger, I'd certainly look into it, though.

does anyone really think that Apple didnt expect hacks to come out. My guess is that Apple will continue their push to run OSX on their hardware, but will release a version that will run on any PC based system. By doing that, Apple could seriously eat into Microsofts
market share, especially if they keep up their BS with vista and all of its rumored issues.
All I can say is if I could get the look and stability of Apple with the price and software availabiliy of Windows I would be a very happy man.
we shall see I guess,

The VMWare "requirement" is only if you don't have exactly the right physical video subsystem, it just so happens that VMWare can provide this hardware environment through emulation - at the cost of speed.
If I where Apple I'd be worried about this since whilst I've no doubt there'll be lots of changes between now and release it does mean that blackhat hackers can use the build as a test bed for security cracks and virus writing. The main thing that has kept OS X free of nasties to date has been the relatively small number of seats (market share), it's a sad fact of life that if OS X x86 does succeed in the market it'll attract both good and bad attention. Having this "internal" build out there being picked to pieces is not good for Apple. The PC community is different from the Apple community, by which I mean the PC community is used to home brew system building and everything else that goes with the freedom to choose system components. Apple are going to find it hard to "control" OS X on x86 to the degree that they can/could on their own Power hardware. Still maybe these growing pains are what it's going to take for Apple to have a long term future outside of personal media devices.

I doubt Apple will provide an official supported version of OSX for generic PC's. It's rather simple really... with their own hardware base they only have to test 2 or 3 variants of each component per model. This ensures that the number of permutations while still high is manageable. Microsoft on the other hand has no control and Windows needs to run on 100's of variants of each part of an unknown PC configuration. They do a great job... but as you all know it's not going to be complete.
If Apple were to officially release a version of OSX that was for generic PC's then they would have the same set of problems as Microsoft has... but without the huge resources.
It's quite likely that hacks will work reasonably well on most mainstream PCs, but the best advice is when you are buying your next computer buy a mac instead. It will run both OSX AND Windows with full support/sanction.

I think you nailed this issue exactly right. I may be wrong, but I believe those of you waiting for an official OS X release for your non-Apple hardware will be waiting a long, long time.

I hate to beat a dead horse since its been said before, but the fact that Macs only have to support whatever hardware Apple has chosen IS the reason for its stability.
I love OSX .. A LOT, but I guarentee you that it would start to have some of the driver issues that Windows suffers from if it was as open.
Thats kinda the Catch 22 for Windows isnt it? It wants to be everybodys everything, but then they cant exactly control who or how it uses it. Apple knows this and will NOT allow this to happen.
They know that by controlling as many "variables" as possible, they can control the quality of the user experience.
Ok.. thats enough from me. Please continue :D

I just want them to hurry up and sell me a dual proc intel mac!!
Although this is cool for Apple, once people get to see just how cool OSX is it will make them want to go get a Mac, especially after they are x86.

Guys I don't know what you're on about :p
Let's look at some FACTS:
Linux runs on most x86 hardware these days. Drivers are always being written. Linux and Unix are very similar?
MacOS runs off OpenDarwin, a free Unix distribution. OpenDarwin itself has a lot of drivers as it is.
I really don't see where it's so far fetched for MacOS to run on most Windows PC's.
It's just a case of Apple wanting it? Even if it's not the latest version?
Also maybe the companies that market OpenGL based software can talk Apple into it?
Specially if next Windows leaves Alias, Softimage, Newtek out of it?
Not so sure about cracked versions though? Maybe it's only rumours?
Actually running latest Gnome desktop might be similar to running MacOS?
