heyho peeps, since everyone is so inspired by the LOTR theme, I decided to do sommin inspired by LOTR myself.
But since EVERYONE and their mother are doing orcs and goblins [no offence ;)] I decided to take a different approach.

therefor and without further blah

You already know how I feel about this guy !
Great work [again] :D
I would only enlarge the lil twiggy on the left side of his head.

Love the style, keep going.

Cheers.

Allready told you I think it's cool, but out in the open:
he has personality and I love it :)

Well, I like it alot as a model. But it doesn't fit the character from LOTR. That character was evil, this one looks too kind. None the less, it looks nice :)

ah yes, good point, but as always, it is modeled in a neutral emotion.
I'm planning to do some morphtargets on him when the model itself is finished to make him more evil ;)

I'm not sure if u mean you're going to use the morphs to alter the way he looks, or to simply give him expression.
My comment was more from a design stand point. He has nice curved features, a big rounded nose...
Sharper edges and features would have been a more traditional way to make him look meaner. But, don't mind me, I like the way he looks, and where he's going.

Equinoxx

ah yes, i see what you mean.
I think i'm not going for that overly mean look . . .
I was inspired by this picture and i think that's the way i'm gonna head for.

http://img-fan.theonering.net/rolozo/images/hildebrandt/willow.jpg

for the rest, here's a VERY early morphtest just to see if i can do it [never did morphs before]
there's no sound and looking back at it, there's so many things allready wrong with this. But it's a test, so waht the hey huh ;)

Very good Equinoxx!
Instead of making a zombie-demon-orc-monster (like everybodyelse...), you made a nice tree!
That alone is 5 stars!!
PLEASE do not make him evil!!!!
I like to see a wise, old, friendly tree guy, instead of a "evil" tree.
That's a lot cooler I think, but it's up to you ofcourse ;)
It's a diffirent kind of character, but I like it!
Conclusion: COOL
And don't forget to give him some nice huge branches!!

WOOOOOHOOOOO:airguitar

(Ps: fix that thick underlip, it's too "lip-like" for a tree!)

nice nice

Aearon

very nice idea equinoxx, especially because the old forest wasn't in the movies

...and very good execution too

but i also think that he looks little too 'nice', in the books he isn't really evil to the roots, but sort of 'crooked' - i think one should be able to see that, but the features of his face are a little too smooth for that i think

you really inspired me, now i'll have to model something 'lotr' too, so many great characters / places in there

i think i'll also do something from fotr that's not in the movies ... let me see ;)

What's wrong with orcs

Well, you know I like this one, Yves, so I just thought I'd post and say : WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME YOU HAD POSTED THIS YOU SILLY KAKAPOO???

So here I am officially showing my support for your WIP :D

Oh, and I say make him evil. He is, after all, an extremely sinister character in the book, so why change that?

Equinoxx

First time I saw that pic, I thought it was a good tree too (haven't red the books).
But evil is evil, Equinoxx, so better sharpen those features :)

A very nice start! As for good/evil.. well, maybe he can look good, but with subtle hints of evilness.. and when he strikes at his victims he gets this really evil face :) I mean, after all.. would you approcah an evil looking tree?

nibo

would you approcah an evil looking tree?

Nope!
Same for a good look'n one!

:argh:

Chong

Well, from the art you posted I can see that it's another way to go. He looks more demented/warped than evil in that pic. That could be a pretty cool angle to play too....Ahh, I'm just gonna shutup now:scream::)

I'm putting in my vote to keep him friendly looking. There's evil schidt everywhere and it's nice to see something with character instead of relying on that fear factor to impress someone.

It's come a long way since you first showed me EQ. Looking awesome man.

Why?

This not evil-looking tree fellah (Willow) is almost an illumination to this forum when it comes to character design.
Don't you agree? Therefore I vote for a friendly tree fellah.
:D

We need more originality!
Keep going Equinoxx.

Cheers.

hm . . . yeah i might keep him friendly and wise, depsite the fact that he's a sinister character in the book . . .

I dunno . . . it just inspires me more then another evil character eventho this one has every right to be one . . .

on with the show. here's today's update
I definitely need to change the lowerlip to that of an old mans btw.

Be carefull with what you say...... :surprised

I stay with my comment about the lil brench on the side of the head. I think it should be enlarged/ thickened.

Also : are you going for a real face look?
I hope this makes sense.... I mean the inspiration pic you posted has a face wich is blended in the tree. You have too look twice too see the face. Willow (http://img-fan.theonering.net/rolozo/images/hildebrandt/willow.jpg)

Curious what you're going to do, but it's still a W.I.P......

Keep going.

Cheers.

I think that's cool Equinoxx!

Kinda reminds me of the tree characters in El Bosque Animado <The Living Forest> (http://www.elbosqueanimado.com/2000/html/i_portal.htm) ...

But I know that's not necessarily the feel that you're going for. Excellent job!

Very nice tree, I wouldn;t change a thing, and about the evilnes issue, can't you make it a evil brother???? Top notch modeling :buttrock:

To me, he's no evil so far, but that's definately a different and interesting angle for the LOTR story-telling, maybe orcs are a little easier to use for a dramatic scene ;-)), that's why I personally chose to make one. But if I had to make a lovely still image, I would rather for Tom Bombadil's house or Silverbeard's(sp?)encounter with the two hobbits in the woods.
Nice work, keep it going, we want some nice textures and animations:buttrock:

that's a very moody oldmanwillow; not my though of it, but a nice interpretation(in the "The Hobbit" mood a bit).Waiting for the morphs.

Pickman: Silverbeard: Treebeard. [Haven't you read the book in English yet? on the HarperCollins paperback there is written (don't know whose critique it was) "the English-speaking world is divided in two, those who have read The Lord of The Rings, and those who are going to read it"; I think everybody who know a bit of english and interrests in fantasy has to read that book in the original version... ]

well the ents, those characters are strange, and I have a very vague idea of what they could look like, just a misty mix of a tree and an human, I wonders how it will look like in the Peter Jackson's film, yes my precious, I wonders. All the drawings, paintings, and interpretations I've ever seen of them looked quite off I thought.

Aearon

m@.: the main illustrators for the movies are alan lee and john howe, and the ents will look like these guys painted them

i think alan lee did a really nice painting of fangorn (http://www.k-dump.net/files/cgtalk/Treebeard-(Fangorn)-by-Alan.jpg) ...imo he hit the nail on the head, especially the eyes (which are an important part of the character)

btw, you can see him in the latest TTT trailer for something like 5 frames :D

quite nice illustration! if they'll look that it'll be neat. Still too human.. and yeah, the eyes are very important indeed, and while the expression is very emotional and thoughtful I'd see them darker and "deeper" but well, heh.

...Sorry Equinoxx that was not the topic... I'll stop there .

that's ok m@.

the true purpose of art is to break loose an emotion imo.
looks like my old man willow did just that [not saying it is a piece of art, but you know what i mean ;)]
