I don't know anything about rendering (nothing, nada, zip) and I would be most gracious if I get all the help I can. Me and a friend are given the task to tell a story in 3D, combining artistic skills with coding and algorithmic ability coded in DirectX9 and Visual Studio.NET. What we want to learn is how to go about this task and what other tools (such as engines, SDKs, tutorials, best 3D Software eg Maya, etc..) must we use to get this task done. Any tutorials are acceptable.

You basically need a free or low-cost 3d engine like Torque ($100) or OGRE (free).

Google for machinima for more information on this sort of thing.

Try quest3d. The lite bundle costs you about $130, and it's worth every cent. You should try the unlimited demo (unlimited, except for the save button, heh ;) ).

Basically it's a node-based GUI of a dx9 engine, similar to Virtools Dev (formerly NeMo Dev). With the SDK (beta! Check the faq) you have the possibiltiy to create your own nodes and gadgets. Also, the community over there is very vital and frequented; finding tuts and support should be your least problem.

However, I also recommend having a look over OGRE. It's a very ambitious and promising project. But if you're after a more intuitive and less technical oriented engine, go for quest3d.
