I don't know anything about rendering (nothing, nada, zip) and I would be most gracious if I get all the help I can. Me and a friend are given the task to tell a story in 3D, combining artistic skills with coding and algorithmic ability coded in DirectX9 and Visual Studio.NET. What we want to learn is how to go about this task and what other tools must we use to get this task done. Any tutorials are acceptable.

First you need .NET 3D engine.
there's a list of all engines that exist in the world: http://www.devmaster.net/engines/
Or you could work with pure DX9 through C# or VB.Net but you don't want that couse you don't have knowlege.
When you find your .Net engine (Purple#, TrueVision3D,...) start examine it tutorials and samples, and within a week, you'll learn basics (if you're not stupid), and within a month you will know the idea of making real time stuff.
I hope it helps.

How can you recommend him Nehe and OGL when he's supposed to do everything with DX and .NET???

You could look at www.quest3d.com (http://www.quest3d.com)It is a very powerful real-time 3d (DirectX 9) development envirnment which you pogram by linking nodes (which represent c++ libraries) together in a graph view while watching the scene as you work. The creation process is rapid as there is no compiling just to see what you are working on. There is no programming required unless you want to write your own nodes in c++. There is a demo version and a cheap (lite) edition that should be enough for you. There are no huge royalty fees unlike just about every other commerial engine out there. See at the demos page here http://www.quest3d.com/index.php?id=15

Maybe he meant to say http://nexe.gamedev.net/ then?
