how can I optimise this model?
any other c+c

real nice model, real clean to :D

it's pretty optimized as it is, but ofcourse if you really want to bring the polycount down a little i suggest you take some out of the lips and teeth, maybe a few from the forehead.
i could make a paint-ver but looking at the model i think you're expereidnced enough to see them yourself

Btw, will you texture it aswell ?
if so, what version of the joker will you do ? the old one or the new one ( new one is more human i think ).

My favorite incarnation of the Joker is from the Arkham Asylum graphic novel. Texture wise I am aiming fo something between that and a sort of Bisley styling but we'll see.

hey, as a huge comic dork, i can't wait to see this finished!
but, i also see a few things that you might want to work on...

i think that his hairline should be pushed further back
his chin is usually bigger, but in some comics it's not too big...
the back of his head seems a little too big...
check out this picture @ the link below

look pretty good so far. by looking at the concepts and the way the lights hitting, it looks like the chin might be poping out alittle bit, try bringing it forward and see how that looks.
otherwise. good start.

Saramago
08-10-2005, 11:11 PM
i've pushed and pulled that chin around for hours. I was worried it was too extreme longer but here it is. It could go longer to match the dave Mckean illustrations but somehow it just looks off in 3d.

update : what do you think? Currently at 2300 tris. I expect to finish a bit under 3500. I think I need to add a cut or two around the armpit and crotch. I was going to model him in a trench coat but I decided this would be more charaterful. On to the hands . . .

wow i am absolutely in love with this. any chance of a wireframe of the body? be easier to crit it that way :), but for right now, nothing wrong with it, the expression on the face is fantastic

Hand and wires
- I'll post a better quality wire tomorrow when I finshed tidying up what I can see is obviously wrong. Gonna do a rig test before I go any further. Also got to decide whether I want to do any facial morph stuff (which I haven't done before) - probably not the best model with that fixed grin I guess.

Tight model, very stylish  besides the lips and eyes i dont think the head needs much optimization...personally i think it's fine the way it is. Cant wait to see it textured. How many polys so far?

The face and the clothes resembles the Batman animated shows Joker, very good, but i just think the hair should have been made a little diffrent. What about having hold a trick gun in his hand.

SHEPEIRO
08-12-2005, 10:12 AM
i agree with komoo i think you should spend a few more polys on the hair and give it that wild look that you see in the concepts.

Saramago
08-12-2005, 11:12 AM
yeah, I agree about the hair. I Haven't had much success texturing hair in the past so I guess I was being a bit conservative. I'll work on a more wild style. Does anyone know a good hair texturing tutorial I could look at?

SHEPEIRO
08-12-2005, 11:49 AM
there are loads of hair tutorials but they seam very narrow for what is a very different prossess each time, you need right tutorial for right kind of hair.

i think with your s your pretty much there with the modeling, just make the strands longer and fan out a bit then do the rest with the transparency.

transparency should have lts of hairs curling and crossing each other. + i think even with transparency keep strands quite thick like clumps of hair, but use diffuse to make more detail. er if you know what i mean
it should work out

check out this link to bobos rat dude and check the links he gives for hair tutorials. His own tutorial is definately worth a view so download it. Very insightful.

Hi, Could someone please post an image (or a link) of a hand unwrap that works well. I have tried various methods in the past but the sides of the fingers always seem to be a mess.

thanks

Headless
08-12-2005, 07:27 PM
With the current model that i'm working on i've tried a new way of unwrapping the hands which should cut down on seams. This may not be the best way to do it in practice, but in theory I think this is about as efficient on seams as you can get for a game.

http://xs41.xs.to/pics/05325/handuvw.jpg

K, so the way this works is that i've planar mapped the palm and top of the hand, and cylindrically mapped each finger. Then i've matched up each side of the long finger seam on each finger, so that i can paint a strip of texture, split it, and use a half of the strip on each side of the finger so that when they join up, they eliminate the seam. Then i've welded the palm and top of the hand together at the side, and then i've welded each finger to the hand in such a way that they'll fit. I tried to make sure when I was mapping each finger that the cylinder seams were at the side of the fingers, so even if the seam weren't fixed with the matching that I did, that the seams are fairly hidden anyway.

With this setup, even with no seam matching, you should still only have one seam on the side of each finger, and a ring seam around where the fingers join the hand, which is far better on seam reduction that if you simply planar mapped the top and bottom of the hand including the fingers.

Hi Roland - JP here. I see that Bisley is one of your main influences for this character. I would assume that this extends to the textures. If so, how are you going to go about realising them? Hand drawn or Photoshop? And if hand drawn, what media?

Idea - I agree about this model not being the ideal subject for a facial animation project. But, it would be interesting to see that big grin form from a relatively passive face; from one extreme to another.

See you soon.

Finished Model - successful rig test - unwrapped 2886 Polys which is quite a bit under what I was expecting. Looking at the wire is there anywhere I should think about add a few cuts to smooth out deformation or add detail?
I am quite happy with it though so maybe I should just be satisfied with the low poly count.
I forgot the flower. . .

looks great! i think if you've done a successful rig test than you can probably use the extra polys purely for asthetic(?) detail. maybe smooth out the brow a little bit? it seems very sharp to me. maybe some more detail for the bow tie?

Nice looking Joker. I don't have much experience in gaming work but that's a nice looking model :-P, even for a high res model it would be pretty sweet looking.

I've been working on the face this morning. Still a long way to go with it. Can't decide wether to go more extreme or to simplify. Gonna focus on the brow and hair this evening. I'm happy with bits of it and not sure about others will be interested to see what y'all think. Look forward to a bit of c + c.

Very, Very Nice, my only two comments are
1. the jaw line goes behind the ear, it should end where the ear begins,
2. personally i'd like to see the mouth ends further back the face showing more teeth and a more sinister exagerated smile.

Ace work.
[Saramago] i'd imagine because the pinstripes aren'y so contrasted to the Suit colour they shouldn't be too obvious.

this is becoming awell visited thread, very nice head. yopu know the clothes should take second fiddle to the head. keep the detail to folds. make the hands light like the face, and the clothes dark to get that kind of sinister/expressive mime artist kind of feel.

cant wait to see this in some exagerated, over dramatic poses

Saramago
08-17-2005, 04:38 PM
Just a small update - wanna get the clothes done today, lots more creases to dodge and burn
Got to decide on a prop for the poses. I'd love to set up some poses with a Batman model. Maybe I'll make Bisleys Batman from Judge Dread crossover . . . 'cept my next project needs to be something quite different to this as I am desperately trying to get a balanced folio together for Sept.

and put a gun with a really big barrel (not long but fat...around)

that would look awesome

Saramago
08-17-2005, 09:57 PM
well I am all but done with the texture so what do you think? I really want to push it on this project so I would appreciate a bit of critcism. The major thing I've noticed is the back of the head currently shows up the symmetry struggling to tidy that up.

Gonna add a hand cannon then do the poses. Maybe ready for finished work gallery tomorrow.

question about the hands though, is he wearing gloves or not? cause they seem like they're textured like he isn't, only he's got no fingernails... so which is it?

Hey Saramago,

another great update, i think it's all spot on. if it were mine i'd only make 2 changes.
1. the mouth, i'd widen the smile, seems to narrow from front
2. remove some of the readness around the eyes and add some white over pupil to excentuate the nutty look he's got, also i think the highlight in the pupil confuses things a little so i removed it. please have a look, hope this helps.

Minor nitpick: Dont forget to mirror the eye texture because in reality the light reflected should be on the same side for each eye...like so:

I actually had a bit of a disaster. One of my major layers in photoshop got badly blured and because I was working close up on the sleeve I didn't notice till it was to late. I managed to rescue it a bit but some of the detail is lost. I don't have the heart to go over it all just at the moment.

For now I'm moving on - have submitted to final work gallery awaiting validation. It'll look like this . . . and be high res.

mmm cant see where you have lost detail so its probably nothing to sweat about.

the other day i was working on my puppet, i split it up to texture it, and managed to save over main file with the head , so i lost almost half a fully modelled, uvwed, textured, pretty much completed aaaaagh. have lost the heart to go on with it at mo.

dosnt it suck when its your own fault.

Yeah, losing work sucks ass. My Wacom's been crashing Photoshop lately, dunno why. I lost a ton of tight rendering work the other day but I managed to redo it all.

It looks great, though. You did a fabulous job. Please post the link to the gallery post when it's approved. :)

Wow. Totally fantastic.

I find the refs you posted from that one artist really freaky looking. I wonder if you could get more of that feeling out of the character by reducing his pupil size.
