View Full Version : SNOW FALL - Help or Tutorial
iceblademush 08-10-2005, 05:05 PM Hi, for my showreel i need to do falling snow...
Now im from Africa, so we dont have much snow, so what ive got so far , people who have seen lots of snow say its not really realistic...
I also used the default settings on BLIZZARD and SNOW, but they werent too good..
Anyone know of a tutorial or could some kind soul help me, with some good setting for a snow particle system?
Another question is, how should i go about doing the snowflakes? As faces, or instanced geometry?
Thanks
Richard

Use a parray (assuming you don't want to use pflow), have it emit from a plane above your camera. I'd go the facing particles route, shaded with a little noise (for the material, try the smoke material mentionned here, except make the particles much smaller: http://www.neilblevins.com/cg_education/water_fire_smoke/water_fire_smoke.htm ) Have them travel down with gravity, and then use a wind with turbulent noise turned on to give the particles a little random motion on the way down.

a while back i was playing ''syberia II'' wich most of animations shows falling snow , i tried to recreate a snow falling scene like from that game , here is what i got. (http://www.geocities.com/samsed00/Cgtalk_up/flake01.avi) (divx 5.2 requiered)
anyway you can create it by using like what blevins said a PArray or with Pflow....etc
obviously i was trying to create snow , then i used it .i create 2 snow superposed to each other 2 winds ( one with 0 strength the other one with a .25 i think, and of course with some turbulence , scale, frequency)
for the material : a mask in the opacity slot did the job ,both of the mask's slot with gradient map.
to resume :
Snow01--bind--wind01+wind02
snow02--bind--wind01
material snow01
opacity--mask-->(map=gradient, mask=gradient with noise )
material snow02 : same as mat snow01 but a bit more noisy.
i think , hummm, that's it.
hope could help
PS :i don't know where is the max file right now, if you want it , i'll search for it and send it to you, PM me.

thats really nice, i like it.....
I will try what you said, but if you do have the max file, that would be great too....
Thanks
