i built up my character body parts seperately and then combined the geos together. then used mirror to copy the other half of the body.....

then i push "convert poly to subdi" button , nothing happen....

so i undo the mirroring, and try it again, it actually works on the original half....

then i mirrored again, it just cannot make the convertion.....then i tried to use copy poly faces by -1 xscale, and use duplicate -1 xscale....none of this method works.

before i combining the body parts, i actually tested mirroring the polys and convert to subdiv individually to check the outlook... i just don't understand why it failed later....... after i use combine and merge vertices....

one thing strange happen as well, when i duplicate the poly by -1 xscale, i try to combine the two part together... it turn out to be the duplicated part loss its shading and displayed as dark brown .....

is it because of the normal stuff ? or other reason?

anybody knows why is it? is it a bug of maya? thank u for your help folks!! :)

Start by fixing the normals on your duplicated and mirrored half:

-Scale your duplicated object by -1
-Freeze transforms on your newly mirrored object
-Go to: Window>General Editors>Attribute Spreadsheet...
-Select the Render tab
-Click on the heading for the "Opposite" column, enter a zero in the box and press Enter
-Then, go to: Edit Polygons>Normals>and click Reverse

That usually takes care of any wierd normal problems after doing a negative scale.

As for the conversion to Sub-D, you probably just need to increase the maximum number of "Maximum Base Mesh Faces":

-Go to: Modify>Convert>Polygons to Subdiv and select the option box
-Increase the value inside the "Maximum Base Mesh Faces" box. The value that you use here just depends upon how many faces you can afford to have in your scene. If you just want Maya to convert your polygons to Sub-D just enter in a really high number. Just keep increasing the number until Maya converts your mesh.

Hopefully this helps! :)
