View Full Version : The start....
fried 08-10-2005, 01:12 PM Hi guys, starting as a game modeller would be my dream, but I till have a long way to go...
Anyhoo... decided to start of my first low-poly character, there is not much to show yet, but I just want to know, why my top leg looks smoother than my bottom half of the leg. I have worked through Paul Steeds book, and have had the same problem. Is it cause my edges are'nt turned right? Please Help

right your working in max arnt you,
i think you edited a cylinder for the top half of the leg and extruded the bottom half. the new extruded polys have not been assigned a smoothing group.
select the polys you want to smooth and one of the already smoothed polys, and assign them the smoothing group that is already depressed (you will find this in poly properties in poly section of edit poly/mesh modifier).

I'm carrying on slowly but surely, but i wanna do this right. I have started the torso, but the top half seems to be a bit of a bother... I know the proportions aren't right yet, but I will sort that out l8er. Any C+C.

It's lookin really good so far. The only thing I would say is that you need to draw your image plane with the arms either out straight of somewhat up at a 45 degree angle. This makes for correct deformation in the shoulders. There is a great tutorial at http://www.poopinmymouth.com/process/character_tutorial/character_process.htm
I had searched all over when I was doing my first character and I found this one by far to be the best. Good luck!

HI guys, not much of a update, but just have a question, the area marked with red is supposed to have hair, coming out from under the helmet, is it better if the hair is attached to the rest of the mesh or not?

i think that depends largely on what you're going to do with the hair, as well as who you talk to.
according to Micheal McKinley, author of The Game Artists Guide To Maya, you should make it a seperate object, parent it to the head joint, and constantly tweak it if you're doing blend shapes, personaly i'd just make it all one mesh and be a little more carefull when painting weights, seems like it would save some time:shrug:

Hi guys, have not had much time to wotk on this, veeeery busy at the old job. Here is another small update, finished of the pelvic armour and leg armour(which still bother me). Also added temporary hair and started the chest plate. Attaching a wireframe as well in case anyone can help me by telling me areas where the mesh can be refined, or any problem areas.
