Sorry. Not a Max user.
Only feedback I can offer is the PO route - but you likely already are aware of that option...

The last time I tried it with Max 6, the connection still didn't work correctly.
With what version of Max are you using it?
There also is an explanation in the docs about how to set it up.
I had serious problems in my tests with it:
First, it didn't respect the modifiers position in the stack but did take the final output of the stack as input. So if you have a meshsmooth above messiah, it uses the smoothed object. :banghead:
Second, after saving and loading the scene again, the connection to messiah and the object were kind of broken. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
Unusable for serious work in my book.
Use PointOvenPro. It works.
Cheers,

I tried it with 6 and 7. The plugin won't load at all which makes me think there is something wrong with the build. I just wanted to test the demo. I guess I'll have to buy PO if I buy this. Thanks.

And you followed the installation routine from the docs?
I didn't test the plugins in the new demoversion, but since it is save-disabled, maybe the connection to other software doesn't work too? On the other hand, in that case, they could leave the plugins out of the demo anyway...
I don't know. I don't own max, so I can't give it a try...
In my tests (half a year ago with the max demo) installation was the only thing that worked without problems ;)
Yes, buying PO will save you lots of anger and despair. The shortfilm "Fallen Art" for instance is mostly animated in messiah, rendered in Max and transfered with PO.
