View Full Version : Tiki Man Texture
swirlee 08-10-2005, 07:34 AM Okay guys go easy. After months on not getting anything done, being distracted by work, friends and most recently Battlefield 2, I am doing my best to get motivated to finish some old projects and start some new and I need your help.

I modeled this guy who knows how many months ago and I have been slowly texturing him over the last couple weeks. He is finally starting to come around, but he definately needs more detail. I plan on adding cartoony tribal like war paint/tatooing in some brightly colored fashion to get away from all the browns and warm colors and the ring around his waste will eventually be some type of woven rope to hold his skirt up. His feet are suppost to look dirty and muddy, don't know if I pulled that off well enough and I still need to add his toe nails and toes. Whatuya think?

real small update... still trying to put more detail into the skin and messed with the muddy feet a little, don't know if it looks much better. Any suggestions? Also I am having trouble smoothing the edges around his ankles. Maya doesn't seem to want to cooperate and its not just this project. Bummer.http://insomniousproject.com/dump/Misc/Tiki/Tiki6.jpg

I dig the style! You should do a high rez texture with some nice muddy feet, ill rock. Nice work!

I love this dude but the dirt on his feet looks too random. The bottoms and sides should be more caked, with less on top of the feet.
I agree with the mask texture, it rocks!

when you modled the feet, did you make them seperately and then combine them? cause if so and you didn't merge the vertices as well them the smoothing wont work, sometimes if there's any extra faces as well them it won't smooth props, can we see a wire? he's makin me want a fruity drink with an umbrella in it so good job!

Beastie-
Thanks. Maybe you never know, can't seem to find any time to get anything done.
Tomorrow-
I agree about the random part, but I cant seem to get anything else to look better. I know what you guys are talking about having more mud on the bottoms and sides, but I was going for a "just dried after stepping into a few knee high puddles" look. I guess its a group consensus that I failed on that part so maybe I will see if it looks better with just the bottoms and sides muddy.
Scudz-
verts are all merged... normals all facing out... there shouldn't be any problem, but its still gives me trouble. Seems like Maya started acting quirky a few video card driver updates ago. That or maybe previous versions of maya ran okay and now the new ones don't like my workstation. Dunno. Here is the wire.

hmmm, maybe try increasing the space between the ankle section? it looks really narrow from this angle... uhm yeah.... do you have an ATI video card? i find maya doesn't like ati very much, mine starts to get relly slow after modeling for more than an hour, though i can pretty much texture/animate/render all day long, and max runs fine.

yeah ATI is really disappointing me as far as post Half-Life 2 functionality. HL 2 was supposed to be built around the 9700 yet it still ran only moderately well. Now most games run like crap and alot of my 3D/2D apps choke up in places that never gave me problems before.

I think I found a workaround that covers my ankle problem thats also probably a little more authentic as well as a better design. Also added a kukui bead necklace to make him a little less plain. Messed around with the mud a little too. Any better?

Cool, add some dirty toe nails
Hm, should he have shadows under his mask and necklace?
And also...are you gonna carve eye-holes so he can see?
I'm diggin his cute skirt...lol

Toes!! I also made new little ankle things.. his others looked like propellers. I think these look alot better. Gonna add a little muscle definition here and there then tatoo and war paint time. Hopefully!

I always thought that when you first posted the picture, that the feet was the weakest link, but now that you have made the nails visible, its has really no weak link. Really good texture on the feet.

the ankle things definatly look better now, though until you pointed out thier propller-ness they seemed fine, if a little off. the toes look really good, you almost can't tell that there's only really one:thumbsup:

looks just about perfect.
any chance of a back shot

As requested. I plan on leaving him bald with maybe some tatooing on his head. Next up tatoos and some warpaint, then perhaps an island oasis for him to live on.

I like it, nice little model.

looking good, but that seam down the back, maybe it's just his spine?, seems to really stand out, you might blend it a bit more with the rest of the back. maybe a little more defanition around where his neck meets hi skull as well?

hmm.. well it's supposed to be some muscle definition like below, but he is a fat cartoony little tiki guy, so I didn't want to add too much. I think once I add some tatooing it will break it all up better and add some much needed color. Once that is done let me know if it still looks weird.

well that's just... uugh:twisted:
i know what you're going for, but if you do an image search, or click on this link, http://www.ertra.com/temp/weekly/bigbut.jpg, fat guy's aren't really known for muscle definition, unless they're fat like Micheal Clarke Duncan where it's actually muscle but looks like a beer gut

the only thing i think is weak is the back of his head.
two ideas for this.
1 tatooing like mawaree(sp uh native newzealanders)
2 little afro made with a few shell objects round head. possibly with bald patch on top.
just think this would finish him off.

some white stripes on his arms and albues, what about making a hut for him.

just fort! he needs a surf board. not a plastic one a wooden board with stone stuck in the bottom like the ones polykneeseon people use. note the awfull spwelling im excited.
erm just trying to find image, but nothing quite like inm thinking of is coming up. theyre like square planks of wood with one end bent uop and flint like stone stuck in bottom.
heres what i got anyway.

Dude, that is a really cool character. How bout some sandals on him. :) Are you using a G.I. script for rendering? You might want to tone down the intensity of the key light. I would also put some hair stubble on his head.
:)
Love his mask! Very nice model.

after a few days of lazyness...
http://insomniousproject.com/dump/Misc/Tiki/Front_Back2.jpg
Started some of the tattooing, but I didn't want to get too involved before I checked to see if you guys thought I was heading in the right direction. Keep in mind this is just a tattoo update, I will also add colorful warpaint to break up all the warm colors. Do you guys like the bone added to the necklace or is he becoming too "busy"? For some reason this shot looks a little blurry to me... I dunno why, sorry about that.
XNO-
THANKS!
Podman-
Thanks... No G.I. just my lighting setup. I will tweak lighting more once I deam him...
COMPLETE! YAY!
As a few of you mentioned his head is definately missing something. I tried a few tattoo designs and it just looked funky. What else might I try? I am definately going to build him a little island to live on with a hut and some nice palm trees and yeah Shepeiro a board would make for a good prop. Being a surfer myself I know exactly what kind of board you are talking about! Thanks for the good feedback so far guys, keep it coming! :)

very nice:thumbsup:
i don't think it's too busy yet, but i can see it getting there with too much colourful war paint. i think you're definately headed in the right direction, but i'd be carefull you don't miss your exit.
maybe the island can have a little monkey getting ready to drop a coconut on his head? just a thought...

The tatoo on his back is really mean looking, i don't like it. I think he need some tatoos on his legs. Those wave tatoos on his belly should be in another color.

yeah i think they would look better if they were blue instaed of black like this

here goes nothing....
http://insomniousproject.com/dump/Misc/Tiki/Tiki_Paint_Front.jpg
http://insomniousproject.com/dump/Misc/Tiki/Tiki_Paint_Back.jpg
rear looks like a little much... maybe if i remove the blue from around the face it wont look so busy. I think you guys are going a little overboard when it comes to realism. Might I remind you he is supposed to be cartoony and simple. :D (besides the detail in that reference makes my texturing hand hurt just looking at it) Who am I kidding... you guys are probably right.
SHEPEIRO
08-22-2005, 11:02 AM
naw man im not talking aboot realism, just the designs look a little like stuff you'd buy in a surf shop, i think it would look a little cooler with more, erm not realism but grit.

Keep the tatoos on his mask, they are perfect, maybe the blue color should a little darker. The dots looks like, when the butchers paints on the pig about where they are going to cut in them.
