View Full Version : Jahshaka 2.0 RC1 Released!

We are pleased to announce that Jahshaka 2.0RC1 has been announced 'stable' and the source is up on sourceforge ready for release! We put a lot of hard work into rewriting jahshaka as a framework that can take us into the future and we look forward to your feedback!
Jahshaka 2.0 is a complete rewrite of the jahshaka core and so it took a lot longer that we thought it would to get to a stable version. But since its a rewrite, it comes with a lot of added power and functionality so we hope its worth the wait!
In addition to a variety of improvements we have built a core architecture that can take us into the future and that we can easily build on from here on out to deliver much faster turnaround on major improvements. It will also make it much easier for open source developers out there to join the team and help to move us forward!

Linux builds great from the source and the windows installer is available online. We should be finished packaging the other installers shortly and will update the downloads page with progress. Jahshaka 2.0RC1 source code and binaries are available on our downloads page!
Since this is the first Jahshaka 2.0 release candidate, we really need your help in debugging and making it as stable as possible so please get involved.

I saw this long time before and liked but never actually use it in a project, I hope we can give it a hard time now to see how it behaves.

Great job! This is an invaluable addition to Open Source DCC, a big step forward... Canīt stress enough how much I appreciate this... Stay on track!

We still have a long way to go but we can get there much faster with your help - and in the OSS world there is no such thing as bad or negative feedback when it comes to the features of the tool and what it does - we listen to everything!

we have a pretty unique architecture that allows us to keep the app small and lite - but it really needs a lot of debugging for both features and worflow - as well as to make sure it works well on as many systems as possible...
i think file support is at around rgb (sgi) targa 32, bmp, gif, jpeg and png, we also added support for ILM's OpenEXR but its really slow.... on the load. media formats vary per system, we will speed it up later on. we will get a full list up online...
Well done on getting version 2.0 out, but it's still no more stable for me than any of the previous releases. I can make it crash in about two minutes, just by clicking on a couple of the buttons.

to be honest, feedback like that really doesnt help us out - what did you do to make it crash? we can probably fix the bug as quickly as you can report it - this is open source software :)
please help us... we are developers not digital artists... building free software... that may be unstable but is still good enough to crank out 2k renders in real time with real time effects (if you dont click the buttons that make it crash)

Oh here is someting that I wanted to ask before I installed this software... what are teh hardware requirements of it? I am specifically asking this because the site mentioned OpenGL and OpenHD (whataver that is) as well as using the GPU to accelerate some features. Does that mean you need a spcific video card to take full use of this software? Just curious.

The only requirement is a graphics card and pretty much any graphics card will do... we started all development on nvidia so nvidia cards work the best... then we started porting to arb to support ati, but now we decided OpenGL shading language is the way to go as its supposed to level the playingfield for gpu's and allow us to run on anything...
its been a nightmare for us but the graphics card vendors are all trying to dominate the market instead of playing fairly togeather... anyway, we hope to have all the gpu effects ported to glsl by rc2
what kind of card are you running on?
please let us know how it works out for you!

great job, i tried it little bit seems really promising, but i wish there was a tablet pressure sensitivty support

hmm... we can get it in rc2 for next month... the qt library we use has tablet support so it wouldnt be hard. we plan to rewrite the paint module as a part of this because currently its the most neglected and really sucks... we want to get full roto working in there :)
Hi JahShaka, I realise that may not have been helpful, but that's honestly the reason I've installed, and then quickly uninstalled the program at least three times. I'll post something about the bugs on your forum soon.

i know most of you CG folk are spoiled by the corporations out there but we are doing our best for a free (and free as in source code and all not just freeware) and want to keep it that way :) to help fight the revolution to free up content!
please do post the bugs in the forums as its the only way we can fix them! this is a release candidate so its more testing out the core, and patching all the bugs for RC2 and then hopefully by the time we get to the final release of 2.0 in october it will be rocking, free and most of all very very stable... :)
we also have some really cool surporises for RC2 that i am sure cg artists are going to love...

ahh i just try to open iff and its not supported :sad:
any chance it would be on rc2?
and is it able to import camera from 3d app?

thanks for the props on the design challenge! we figured its a good wayto get the CG crowd involved in the development... as sometimes the gui drives the development, and othertimes the development waits on the gui :)
we will get iff into rc2 - camera import will wait but rc2 will have a really powerful 3d support engine that will (hopefully) blow you guys away :)
