Sorry if this post seems a bit remedial... I'm kind of new around here. I've searched through this thread, but I've not found a satisfactory answer.

Regarding the use of photos in 2D entries... What's the official rule? In most of my illustration work, I combine drawn, painted, and photographed elements (all my own, of course) into the final image. Whether it be a bit of tree bark texture here, or a patch of cloud texture there... Is this not allowed?

2657x3636 is an example - as long as you're in the same ballpark when it comes to pixelcount, then you're set.

I have modeled and textured one of the cops three months ago.
Is it considered prefabricated?

Yes - you cannot use work that was created before the challenge begun, even if you made it yourself.

There's been a claim over in my entry thread (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=273801&page=3&pp=15) (middle-low part of the page) that my new concept for too much like andreja concept (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=280620&highlight=andreja). Frankly, the only thing similar that I see is the fact that they both have a character in the air, but maybe I'm missing something: do you think they are too similar?

Mibus
11-08-2005, 05:04 AM
LexLe, that's fine.

ArtisticVisions, I think gardogg was just pointing out a vaguely similar entry so you knew not to get caught with something similar; at this point I don't see any real similarity at all.

FTP info is out - http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/spectacular/final_image.php

The countdown clock only goes to the start of December 5th GMT, right? If one were desperate, couldn't one still be submitting entries for 24 hours after the clock expires?

All entries must be submitted by Midnight at the end of 05 December 2005 (GMT)

Or is the clock just off by a day?

mibus,

i had uploaded my .rar file yesterday using freshftp. it 'seemed' to go okay. today i thought i would go onto the competition site to check and it says that i have not submitted the final image file. is there any way you can check that.

if i havent sent it properly then perhaps someone could write a little tutorial on how to upload an image to the competition site address using a freely available (to everyone) ftp program?

show us how you did it: what text/addresses etc go where. stage by stage.
As i tried to reupload my file again just before coming here and this time i got errors in my ftp program.
all the best,
chrismoose101.

I think its becouse you havent submitted your final image as a milestone(jpg). But it seems weird not to get any confirmation on the transfer of the ".tiff" file? Submit the final image the usual way(as a milestonein your thread) and i think that'll solve it! :)

Mibus,

I right clicked my Tiff, -send to comperessed (zipped) folder. this time allowing it to be a .zip file instead of a .rar file. sooo.. i now have a .zip file ready to go at about 6mb.

i do the same freshftp setup using the challenge.com address, the password etc. and i am getting an error in the ftp program.

maybe it is me and my ftp program or maybe something on your side. If it is on my side then again, perhaps someone could detail how they successfully uploaded thier image zip file to the comp' site.

regards.
chris.

Hi! In instructions page ('Your Mission' subtitle) is written "...Each challenger should provide an accompanying written description of their scene..."; where is needed to send that written description, and in what format file should be? Thanks!

Hi Chris - you have to use the filename that's given to you. I've renamed yours, and it works fine :)

Hi! In instructions page ('Your Mission' subtitle) is written "...Each challenger should provide an accompanying written description of their scene..."; where is needed to send that written description, and in what format file should be? Thanks!

That's a very good question :). You should put in the "Notes" field for your Final Image upload. I'll adjust the submissions page so it's clearer.

It sounds probable. I'll be sending out emails to all "completed" challengers, starting from later this week.

Did you enter your story in the "Notes" field of the final JPG submission?

Did your FTP'd image have a thumbnail show up on the "Upload Final Image" page?

Hello worthy admins,

Please could you explain to me the difference between a Final Colouring WIP milestone and the Final Image. I realise that this will vary from entrant to entrant and that an answer is not exactly vital, but some kind of definition would be helpful to me.

Many thanks in advance.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but does your final image HAVE to be at least 2657 pixels across? Will you get marked down if you render it at, say, 2000 x 2500?
Truth be told, my image looks ugly as hell in an extremely high resolution, and my computer is creaking under the processing strain just to calculate reflections and shadow maps!
Could i submit a slightly lower resolution render and still be judged fairly?

Cheers.

All systems go and image was uploaded succesfully.

Question: When i got to the uploading instructions -- hostname, password, etc. What about the file name? Do I have to use the file name in the instructions page or is that an example. They do say follow these instruction presicely, this threw me off.

Also what's the rule on entering more than one image?

Thanks

Me again!

Ive finished my entry and im now ready to submit it via FTP.
Im no internet whiz, and FTP is pretty new to me. The only real experience i have with it is where you upload it automatically via an interface (like ballistic's book image submission page) or by dragging the file into a window. All i get with the submission form for this is the passwords etc.
Help!

Also, has your zip file got to be named exactly the same as the one on the ftp information page?

Thanks in advance.

Yes I just checked to see if my image was uploaded and it wasn't so I used the name provided in the FTP info and then zipped the file and re-uploaded. Second later when I hit refresh, VOILA there it was. It'll be your confirmation that the file was uploaded successfully.

Andy H - the sizes given are approximates. Don't go too far lower, but as long as it's roughly "print-res", then you'll be fine. I'm assuming you use the ftp:// link from the BSW?

Open Explorer, type in "ftp://username:password@hostname" (where username, password, and hostname are given to you by the challenge system). Do the drag-and-drop thing then go back to the Final Image page to check. (The file may or may not "appear" to disappear from the FTP location due to security settings on our side).

You absolutely must use the filename given. If you don't, it won't work :)

the_fgdf - I'm not sure I understand what you want to do? If you want the duplicate post removed, let me know.

Hi, I have re-read the FAQ section, and one of the question really bugs me::shrug:

"Q: How early do I have to start submitting milestones?
A: As early as possible. Although there is no due date earlier than the final closing date, part of the final judging vote puts emphasis on Community Interaction, which means that people who 'hold back' their work in progress till the last minute can be penalized.

Does that mean IF your entry don't get "enough" community interaction or don't have "many" viewers or questions with your entry... you are likely out of the game!?... though you have put as many as your wip into it but still don't get much response... well, out of luck then... please tell me this isn't "true"...:D cheers

No. It's really for people who deliberately hold stuff back until the last minute in an attempt to get an advantage (by not sharing ideas).

I have used links to other sites in the text which accompanies my Final Image - is this allowed?

Also I am a little unsure if I have uploaded my final tiff correctly, is there anyway that a generous admin could check this for me? I used 'create archive' on my Mac to '.zip' the file, but don't know if that is acceptable either...

Answer greatly appreciated

I tried to zip my tiff image with tugzip and it won't work with tiff files are there any free zip downloads that will work with tiff files or is there a specific program I have to buy? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. It would be a shame to have worked so many hours and not be able to submit my final image. Ok... I am confuse here, I got the hostname, username, password and filename... so when I have connected to FTP(FTP program, don't know why the browser doesn't work...), why there is no folder inside the CGtalk ftp... should I rename my zip file to the given filename before copy it over? Or there is a particular folder inside FTP that I need to copy the zip file into??? Please help.

Mibus
11-28-2005, 01:19 AM
alvin_cgi: No folders. Rename your file to the filename you're given and place it in the FTP.

Euphrosyne: You don't need a TIFF-specific compression program. Try 7-Zip (http://www.7-zip.org/)?

Avatarist: Links are fine. Your images are all considered uploaded by the system - you can check the final TIFF is OK yourself by revisiting the Submit Final Image page.

rawwad: Looks fine to me...

sh@ke: You might want to try again; it might have been a temporary server issue? If you keep having trouble, email me (robert@ballisticmedia.net).

alvin_cgi: Calibrate your monitor for print the best you can :). The judges will do likewise - I think the target is the same as for the books, so sRGB, gamma of 2.2.

I've checked the image/properties and am a little concerned that it appears as a lo-res version (ie. it displays as 800 x 585 pixels and says it is 153.18 KB (156860 bytes)) - is this normal? - I was kind of expecting to be able to see the hi-res...

Any answer appreciated, sorry to be a worry-nuts - its' my first challenge

Thanks for your help Robert.

I appears that my problem was a host problem because when it finally went through I had done the identical proceedure that I did in the begining. I spent a whole day downloading various software and trying to get through, I am so releived that I finished a few days early and had time to patiently work with this. I shudder to think what it will be like when it really gets busy at the end and people can't get in. Anyway Oh joy, Oh joy I did it!

Mibus
11-28-2005, 11:09 PM
Avatarist: That's normal. We only show a mid-res image (max size 800x800), it's enough to know the upload worked.

Hello Mibus, I'm trying to upload my final image using dreamweaver.
I used all your ftp settings, and uploaded the zip. I could view the zip in the host directory.
After hitting refresh in firefox, the page still says I havent yet uploaded my tiff image.
I tryed again, after I saw you have a given file name as well, so I renamed my zip file to the one in the ftp settings page.
What happens with the zip I uploaded with the original filename?
How do I delete it?
Should I rename also my tiff image, or just the zip that contains the tiff?
TIA
Evan

hey, hello Mibus, I have 3 questions:

1. when I entered to the challenge, I wrote my name as "adrian hdz." but one month ago, I posted a new thread (in the finished work forum) and I received a mail from CG and it said that I was written my name wrong, and I must to writte it complete, so I wrote "adrian hernandez". My question is, if I regitered myself like "adrian hdz", this could be a problem?

2. Can you extend the deadline one day more?? :D (hahaha, I had to ask)

3. I don't know if you can help me, but... by mistake, I modified the configuration color in the Photoshop and I haven't idea how I can restore it... I'm not an expert in Photoshop, instead of solid colors, appears small points of different color....:banghead:

Hi mibus

I just found out a few days ago that my older email adress (zman@artofgaming.net) doesnt work anymore (because my subscription to the old domain name has ended) so I updated my new email (ziv@zivcg.com) in the user CP.
The thing is, I noticed when I log in to the contest page to submit milestones that it hasnt updated there and it stil says my email is zman@artofgaming.net.

I just fear that I might lose some information that would be sent to that adress... (I just uploaded my final tiff submission, was I supposed to recieve an email confirming that its ok?)

thanks

Would it be possible to submit a low resolution final and then upload a high resolution at a later stage? there wouldn't be any differences between the two versions except for the resolution.

Versiden - this is a very familiar problam :)
you just have to find ways around it ...
did you try rendering crops of your image (like the top half and bottom half) and then putting them togheter in PS ? thats what I did (lots and lots of crops and passes).

A little question that may be answered by myself, but I still want to know it for sure:

Everywhere is it said that the challenge ends a midnight of december 5, while in the instructions is said: 'The Challenge runs 05 September 2005 - 06 December 2005. No late entries will be accepted.' There might be people who understand it wrong (or is it meant so?!), and entry there final on the 6th!

Will the deadline now be extended one day (december 5 midnight, to december 6 midnight), due to this 'fault'?

Hi Robert! I've tried to upload my tiff image many times. But Final Image Status is "There was an error loading your file. Please try uploading again". All my attemps were unsuccessful. I can't understand, what's a problem? Please, can you help me with it? Thank you in advance.

Atris: I manually processed it, it went OK. What did you use to make the ZIP? Some of the tools we use don't like it...

Dutchman: It's mentioned as the 6th in a few places, so I've altered the auto-countdown to that. It was probably meant to be the 6th, and I mis-transcribed it into other places.

SquishMe: We're hoping that judging will be a fair bit quicker this time than last, but we're still not putting a definate timeframe on it yet. The next challenge should be early next year, but there hasn't even been an internal date set yet.

Hi Mibus, I have uploaded my final image while ago(28 Nov), went through few times checking, everything looks fine, so I take that is OK.

Another question, I just amended the story of it(not the image), can I update my story...

Thanks

Hi Mibus,
Under the "Terms and Conditions for Artists" no.8 "Artists may to use the images created for personal promotion. e.g. submission for EXPOSE' and other galleries."

I am wondering if I could submit my competition image to "Art of LightWave 3D Book", (I hope my work can get publish in book ;)) as a personal promotion...

Due to technical problems I was unnable to produce a HiRes pic and finished my WIP with an image of 1000x667 px and 72 dpi. Someone suggested I should upload it anyway, so the question is: should I? Or there's really no point in it?

Thanks in advance.

It's possible that your FTP client is just complaining because of the security settings on the FTP, and the upload actually worked. Check the "Final Image" page for a thumbnail - if it's there and looks OK then you've finished :)

Maybe it also ran a little smoother for me because I used it during the low traffic times.

One thing that might help everything run better is limiting the number of milestones that people can submit. I just clicked on a challenge page that had over 200 images in it... for seven milestones! It gets a little bit silly, really, with all the angles and slight color tweaks that get uploaded. It's like a bandwidth contest or something.

A cap at 30 or so would be very reasonable. It would give people plenty of room to change directions if they needed do, but at the same time encourage them to "complete" a milestone before rushing to upload yet another image. But maybe it doesn't happen often enough to be a problem?

Anyhow, thanks again, Mibus!

Any idea how long you think judging may take this time 'round?

Not as long as last time :)

Maybe it also ran a little smoother for me because I used it during the low traffic times.

That would help. Between midnight and 4AM GMT the servers have the lowest load, so that would be a good time.

I think if we limited people they'd be just as likely to submit the bare minimum WIPs, which is *not* what we want :). Maybe a better way of viewing entry milestones is needed?

jugeras: All sorted. You (and a couple of others) had uploaded files with a double extension - ".zip.zip". I extended the "completed?" script to accept those.

Akok: Sure you are. Sort by username, you're on the first page.

FWIW if any of you have ideas on how to improve the process, you should drop me a note.

Realistically at this point, the winners are likely to be announced shortly after the Christmas / New Year break. Judging is well underway, so I'm hoping it will be first or second week back in January. (Though that depends on the judges schedules an our holiday schedules too!)

Robert -

Are you allowed to say anything about how the judging works?
Do the judges appoint points based on some mutually-agreed on system? Or a CGTalk-defined system? Do they have long e-mail debates about the merits of various pieces? Do they judge seperately in isolation, or is it a process where they work together? Do they have a pre-defined set of criteria that they have to abide to, or is each judge "winging it," so to speak?

I can understand if you're not allowed to tell us, but I've long been curious. I'm sure others have been too.

Thanks!

-mike

Mibus
12-18-2005, 10:58 PM
I'm sure it won't hurt to discuss it a little :)

The judges are allowed a fair bit of flex - we don't force them to vote on any particular points, since then we could nearly pick the images ourselves. We point out the guidelines, inspiration - all stuff that's publicly visible - and let them make up their own mind on which images they like, and which images they feel fit the theme. After that, each of the judges independantly votes on the images. If they want to collaborate that's up to them, but AFAIK they usually don't.

When reviewing the images they can look up the challenger info, story, threads, etc. etc.

After all that it gets smacked into a spreadsheet, tallied, we compile the challenge results page, make a feature article, write up a congratulatory thread, then let everyone know :)
